Chapter 3: The Boardroom Confrontation

The corporate headquarters of Whitmore Energy in downtown Dallas was a monument to glass and steel. But inside the executive suite on the 45th floor, the atmosphere was toxic.

Nathan hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. His tailored suit was slightly wrinkled, and his desk was covered in old files from five years ago—the divorce settlement documents he had signed without a second thought. Caroline had taken absolutely nothing. No alimony, no stock, no real estate. At the time, his mother, Margaret Whitmore, had told him it was proof of her guilt, a sign that she just wanted to escape with her lover. Now, Nathan knew it was the ultimate act of defiance from a woman who refused to let her children be bought by Whitmore money.

The heavy glass doors of his office swung open, and Margaret walked in, her diamond necklace catching the light. She looked every bit the high-society matriarch she was, her expression haughty and demanding.

"Nathan, what is the meaning of this?" Margaret demanded, throwing a financial newspaper onto his desk. "I hear you skipped the charity gala last night. And your secretary says you’ve been ordering a full background check on a tech startup in Austin. We have a merger to finalize with Montgomery Utilities next week. You cannot afford to be distracted."

Nathan didn't look up from his files. "Mother, do you remember the night Caroline left?"

Margaret stiffened slightly, her eyes narrowing. "Why are you bringing up that woman? She’s ancient history. She was a social climber from a middle-class background who nearly ruined your image right before our public offering."

"She was pregnant," Nathan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He finally raised his head, his bloodshot eyes locking onto his mother’s face. "She was pregnant with triplets. My sons. They are four years old now."

Margaret gasped, her hand flying to her throat, but the shock lasted only a second before her cold, calculating demeanor returned. "Triplets? Nathan, don't be absurd. If she had your children, she would have sued you for millions by now. It’s a scam. She clearly had them with that doctor she was sleeping with, and now that her money is running out, she’s trying to trap you."

"She drives a Bentley, Mother," Nathan said, standing up slowly, his towering frame casting a shadow over his desk. "She didn't ask for a single dollar from me. Do you know why? Because she is the anonymous founder of 'Apex Aero'—the drone and renewable battery company that just received a five-hundred-million-dollar evaluation from the Department of Energy. She didn't need my money. She used her own designs, the designs your attorneys blocked her from using at Whitmore Energy, and she built a competitor that is currently eating our market share."

Margaret’s face turned pale. "That’s... that’s impossible. She was just an engineer."

"She was the brain of this company!" Nathan roared, slamming his hand onto the desk, causing the glass ornaments to shatter. "And you knew it. Five years ago, you paid a private investigator to hack her phone, didn't you? You saw Dr. Collins’s messages, and you deliberately altered the context when you showed them to me. You told me she was cheating because you couldn't stand the fact that a girl from a normal family held the patents to the technology that made your son a billionaire."

Margaret stepped back, her aristocratic poise fracturing. "I did it for you, Nathan! She was dragging you down. She wanted a simple life in Texas. She didn't understand high society. She wouldn't have fit into the Whitmore legacy!"

"You didn't protect my legacy," Nathan whispered, a cold realization washing over him as he picked up his phone. "You destroyed my family. Effective immediately, Mother, you are removed from the board of directors of Whitmore Energy. Security will escort you out of the building. And if you ever go near my children, I will use every resource I have to ensure you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary."

As Margaret began to scream and protest, two burly security guards entered the office, quietly but firmly taking her by the arms. Nathan didn't watch her leave. He looked at the background report his investigators had just sent him.

Caroline lived in a secured estate in North Austin. And tonight, he was going to see his sons.
