Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Blake looked like a man who had been struck by lightning. He looked from the documents to me, his lips parting but no sound coming out. The two high-priced lawyers beside him exchanged worried glances, slowly realizing their client’s entire moral high ground had just dissolved into toxic waste.
"Emma... I..." Blake took a step toward me, his hand reaching out, his eyes begging for something I could no longer give him. "If this is true... if Julian did this... oh my god, what did I do to you?"
"You abandoned me when I needed you most, Blake," I said, turning my back to him. "Arthur, show them out."
Blake didn't fight it this time. He allowed his security team to lead him away, his steps heavy and broken.
But the drama was escalating outside our personal war. Within forty-eight hours, the news of the paternity suit leaked to the press, accompanied by an absolute bombshell. Julian Harrington had launched a hostile board takeover of Harrington Clean-Energy, citing Blake's sudden emotional instability and his preoccupation with a public custody battle as proof that he was unfit to serve as CEO.
The Harrington stock plummeted by 15% in a single morning.
On Thursday evening, I was preparing dinner for the boys when my phone rang. It was an unlisted number. When I answered, it wasn't Blake. It was Evelyn Harrington—my former mother-in-law, the matriarch of the Harrington dynasty.
"Emma," Evelyn said, her voice sharp, aristocratic, and entirely devoid of warmth. "I hope you are satisfied with the chaos you’ve caused. My son is locked in his study, refusing to see the board of directors, destroying his father's company all because you decided to parade those... those bastard children in front of the media."
"They are Blake’s sons, Evelyn," I said, keeping my voice lethal and calm. "And you know it."
"I don't care whose they are!" Evelyn hissed. "They are a liability right now. Julian is going to take control of the firm tomorrow morning at the emergency board meeting. If Blake loses the company, your precious child-support checks won't be worth the paper they're printed on. I am offering you ten million dollars, Emma. Take the boys, sign a non-disclosure agreement, state publicly that the children are not Blake's, and move back to Europe. Save our family from this disgrace."
I let out a cold, dark laugh. "You really are incapable of understanding love, aren't you, Evelyn? You and Julian cooked up this entire scheme five years ago to control Blake, and now that your puppet is breaking, you want to buy me off again? Keep your money. Tomorrow morning, I am attending that board meeting myself. Not as Blake’s ex-wife. But as the majority shareholder of the Helios Hydrogen patents."
May you like
Evelyn gasped, the line going completely silent before she slammed the phone down.
I looked at Christian Cole—my late father’s protege and our primary financial ally—who was standing in the kitchen doorway. He gave me a sharp, determined nod. "The proxies are ready, Emma. Let’s go terminate a legacy."
