Chapter 2 - The Traitor in the Shadows

The ride to my estate in the affluent suburbs of Lake Forest was dead silent, save for the energetic chatter of the triplets, who were thrilled to have me back from my short research conference in New York. I held them close, answering their questions, but my mind was stuck at thirty-thousand feet, replaying the look of absolute ruin on Blake's face.

Once the boys were settled with their nanny, Arthur joined me in the sprawling, sunlit library of the Winters estate. He poured two cups of black coffee, his expression grave.

"He knows, Emma," Arthur said, sliding a cup toward me. "A man with Blake Harrington's resources doesn't need a DNA test when the evidence is that loud. His legal team will file for an emergency custody hearing or a paternity mandate before the sun sets today."

"Let him try," I said, my grip tightening around the warm porcelain. "The birth certificates list only my name. I gave birth in a private clinic in Switzerland under my maiden name. For five years, I have protected them from his toxic world, his overbearing mother, and the vultures in his company."

"It’s not just Blake you have to worry about," Arthur warned, leaning forward. "Do you remember the messages that triggered his accusations five years ago? The ones from the encrypted number thanking you for 'the hidden data'?"

My blood ran cold. I remembered that night with terrifying clarity. I had been an environmental scientist at Harrington Clean-Energy, developing a revolutionary hydrogen-cell matrix. Someone had intercepted my personal logs, altered the timestamps, and sent messages to my phone making it look like I was selling corporate secrets and having a clandestine affair with a competitor. Blake, blinded by his own deep-seated trust issues and a lifetime of being targeted by gold-diggers, believed the fabrications instantly.

"What about them, Arthur?"

"My investigators finally broke the encryption on the server that generated those fake messages five years ago," Arthur said, opening a folder. "It didn't come from a competitor, Emma. The server was purchased by a shell company owned by Julian Vance—Blake’s own cousin and the current Chief Operating Officer of Harrington Clean-Energy. And guess who helped him orchestrate the leak?"

Arthur pulled out a photograph. It was a shot of Julian Vance having an intimate dinner with Cynthia Sterling—the high-society heiress Blake’s mother, Evelyn Harrington, had desperately wanted Blake to marry instead of me.

"Cynthia," I breathed, the pieces of the puzzle crashing together in a devastating wave of realization. "They didn't just want to destroy my marriage. They wanted me out of the company so they could hijack the hydrogen-cell patents without my oversight."

"Exactly," Arthur nodded. "And right now, Julian and Cynthia are preparing a massive corporate buyout to strip Blake of his CEO position. Blake thinks he’s hunting you for custody, but he doesn't realize his own house is burning down from the inside."

Suddenly, the library doors flew open. My housekeeper looked terrified.

"Dr. Winters, I’m so sorry... I told him he couldn't come in, but—"

"Get out of my way," a furious, commanding voice roared.

Blake stepped into the room. He hadn't changed out of his flight suit, but his tie was ripped open, his hair disheveled. Behind him stood two high-priced Chicago litigators and a private security detail.

"Emma," Blake growled, his eyes locking onto mine with an erratic mix of pain, anger, and desperation. "We are resolving this right now. Tell your lawyers to stand down, because I am not leaving this house without my sons."
