Chapter 4 - The Cornered Snake

Deprived of his investors, facing an IRS audit, and completely locked out of his bank accounts, Corbin’s world unraveled at terrifying speed over the next three weeks.
Hale Enterprises crumbled under the weight of investor lawsuits. Victoria Sterling, realizing that Corbin’s offshore fortune was frozen and that he was facing criminal prosecution, abruptly packed her bags, emptied the Miami condo’s temporary furnishings, and cut all ties with him.
Driven to absolute madness by his public disgrace, Corbin retreated to his mother’s house in SouthPark.
Lorraine, furious that her family's prominent standing in Charlotte society had been shattered, spent her days calling every mutual acquaintance, trying to smear Paige as a "gold-digging sociopath who plotted her husband's downfall."
But Charlotte society wasn't buying it.
The story of how Paige had been forced to pay a $40,000 birthday gala bill while carrying a dangerously ill child—supported by the ER medical logs and the restaurant's security footage—had leaked to local media outlets. Public sympathy was overwhelmingly behind Paige.
One rainy Thursday afternoon, Paige returned to her newly leased townhouse in the historic Dilworth neighborhood. She had spent the last month re-establishing her independent architecture firm, Vance & Hale Designs, securing three major commercial kitchen contracts from former colleagues who were eager to work with her again.
As she pulled her SUV into her private driveway, she noticed a shadow lurking near her front porch.
It was Corbin.
He looked unkempt, wearing an old hoodie, holding a brown paper bag.
Paige remained inside her locked car, her hand resting on the phone, ready to dial 911. She rolled her window down two inches.
"Corbin, you are violating the temporary protective order," she said firmly. "Leave immediately."
Corbin stepped up to the car window, his eyes wild and unblinking. "Paige... please. Just listen to me for five minutes. I’m begging you."
"I have nothing to say to you."
"They're going to indict me, Paige!" Corbin cried, pressing his hands against the glass. "The federal prosecutor called my lawyer today! Wire fraud, tax evasion, money laundering! I’m looking at five to eight years in federal prison!"
"You should have thought about that before you set up shell corporations to steal from your own family," Paige replied, her voice unwavering.
"It was my mother!" Corbin blurted out, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "She pushed me! She kept saying you were taking advantage of me, that you were using my money! She wanted me to secure everything under the family name! I did it for her!"
Paige looked at him with a mixture of pity and profound disgust.
"You're thirty-four years old, Corbin," she said softly. "Even now, sitting on the edge of prison, you are still blaming women for your own cowardice. You blamed me for your party bill, you blamed Maisie for having a fever, and now you blame your mother for your fraud."
"Paige, please... sign the affidavit saying the offshore accounts were a joint estate planning strategy!" Corbin sobbed, dropping to his knees on the wet concrete driveway. "If you sign it, the federal charges drop! I'll give you the Charlotte house! I'll give you everything! Just don't let them take me away from Maisie!"
Paige hit the lock button on her dashboard and dialed 911 on speakerphone.
"Emergency dispatcher?" Paige spoke clearly into the phone. "My name is Paige Hale. My ex-husband, Corbin Hale, is currently trespassing at my residence in violation of a domestic protection order. He is on my driveway right now."
Corbin froze, hearing the dispatcher’s crisp voice answering on the line.
He scrambled to his feet, looking at Paige through the window with pure, venomous hatred.

"You cold-hearted bitch!" he screamed, his voice cracking into a shriek. "You played the quiet, submissive wife for six years just to wait for the right moment to destroy me!"
"No, Corbin," Paige said, looking at him with calm, absolute clarity as sirens began to wail in the distance. "I was a loyal wife who loved you. You just mistook my patience for weakness."
