Chapter 3 - The Public Exposure & The Investors' Revolt

By noon on Tuesday, news of the financial freezing order against Corbin Hale had sent shockwaves through Charlotte’s high-society and corporate financial circles.

Inside the high-rise conference room of Vance & Partners in downtown Charlotte, Paige sat at the head of a massive glass table. She wore a sharp cream blazer, her hair pulled back into an elegant, sharp knot. She looked completely different from the tired, quiet woman who had carried a feverish child through a party thirty-six hours ago.

Beside her sat Harrison Vance—a silver-haired lion of a lawyer—and two senior forensic accountants. On the interactive whiteboard behind them, a complex web of offshore entities, shell accounts, and fraudulent property deeds was displayed in full color.

"We have successfully frozen $3.8 million in domestic assets, Paige," Harrison stated, tapping a pen on his notepad. "The Cook Islands trust is trickier due to international jurisdiction, but because Corbin used domestic wires from his primary business account to fund it, we've flagged it with the IRS Financial Crimes Unit. He is facing potential federal tax evasion charges."

"Good," Paige said, her voice steady and absolute. "What about Maisie?"

"The court granted you temporary sole legal and physical custody under the emergency motion," Harrison replied with a reassuring smile. "Given the ER records documenting his refusal to allow medical care for a 103°F fever, his visitation rights are suspended until a court-ordered psychological evaluation is completed."

Suddenly, Harrison’s assistant knocked on the door and stepped in. "Mr. Vance, Corbin Hale and his attorney, Richard Thorne, are in the lobby. They are demanding an immediate emergency sit-down."

Harrison looked at Paige. "Do you want to see them?"

Paige stood up, adjusting her jacket. "Let them in."

Five minutes later, Corbin walked into the conference room, followed by a slick, high-priced corporate defense attorney. Corbin looked like a shell of the man who had ordered Paige around at the birthday gala. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands twitched nervously.

"Paige," Corbin started, stepping toward her, trying to put on his old charming smile. "Paige, honey... let's talk about this privately. This has gone way too far. We're family—"

"Stop right there, Corbin," Harrison Vance interrupted, his voice booming across the room. "You will address my client through me, or this meeting is over."

Corbin’s attorney, Richard Thorne, pulled out a chair and sat down, motioning for Corbin to do the same.

"Look, Vance," Thorne said, leaning forward. "My client is willing to settle this quietly. He will agree to a 50/50 split of the domestic marital estate, a standard co-parenting agreement for the child, and a generous monthly alimony package—provided your client drops the IRS fraud reports and lifts the injunction on his corporate credit lines."

Paige let out a short, quiet laugh that cut through the room like a razor.

"A 50/50 split of the domestic estate?" Paige said, leaning over the table, looking Corbin straight in his eyes. "You mean 50% of the accounts you didn't manage to hide in Nevis? While you kept a $2.5 million condo in Miami for Victoria Sterling?"

Corbin flinched, his jaw dropping. "Paige... Victoria means nothing to me! It was just a tax shield!"

"Save it, Corbin," Paige said coldly. "Yesterday, you told me that if I ruined your night, I wouldn't have a home to go back to. You tried to trap me, bankrupt me, and take my daughter away from me while leaving me with nothing."

She pulled a thick stack of printed documents from her leather folder and slid them across the table.

"These are the complete audit logs of your fraudulent transfers," Paige continued. "I have already sent copies to Mr. Dalton and every major investor in your firm. As of ten o'clock this morning, Dalton Capital has formally pulled their $15 million venture backing from Hale Enterprises."

May you like

"You... you sent this to Dalton?!" Corbin gasped, jumping out of his chair, his face turning bright red. "You ruined my business! You destroyed my life!"

"No, Corbin," Paige said, standing up and looking down at him with utter composure. "You destroyed your own life the moment you prioritized your ego over our daughter’s life. I am simply cleaning up the mess."
