Chapter 2 - The Morning After & The Pre-Emptive Strike

At 6:30 AM, the heavy wooden front door of the Hale family mansion in SouthPark, Charlotte, creaked open.
Corbin stumbled into the grand foyer, his tuxedo jacket slung carelessly over his shoulder. He smelled strongly of scotch, cigars, and stale anger. He had spent the remainder of the night covering the $40,000 bill on his personal emergency line, apologizing profusely to Mr. Dalton, and enduring his mother's endless rants about Paige’s "unforgivable disrespect."
"Paige!" Corbin shouted, his voice echoing off the marble floors as he threw his car keys onto the glass console table. "Get down here right now!"
No answer.
Corbin marched up the curved staircase, his chest puffed out, ready to deliver the ultimatum he had rehearsed all night: Paige would apologize to his mother on her knees, hand over her architecture savings to reimburse the party bill, or he would throw her out on the street.
He kicked open the master bedroom door.
The room was completely stripped.
The walk-in closet was half-empty. Paige’s designer clothes, her architectural portfolio, her laptops, and all of Maisie’s favorite toys were gone. Sitting on the center of the king-sized bed was a single white envelope addressed to Corbin Hale.
Corbin snatched the envelope, ripping it open with shaking hands.
Inside was not an apology note. It was a formal legal notice served via emergency courier from Vance & Partners LLP.
NOTICE OF EMERGENCY RESTRAINING ORDER & ASSET FREEZE
Be advised that Paige Hale has filed for legal separation on grounds of financial fraud, child endangerment, and spousal abuse. Effective 5:00 AM, an ex parte injunction issued by the Mecklenburg County District Court has frozen all domestic accounts, real estate titles, and corporate lines of credit associated with Corbin Hale and Hale Enterprises, pending a full forensic audit.
Corbin’s breath hitched. "What the hell is this?!" he screamed into the empty bedroom.
He frantically pulled out his phone and dialed his private banker at Wells Fargo.
"David! What's going on with my primary account?!"
"Corbin?" David’s voice on the line was tight and panicked. "I was just about to call you. A federal freeze order and a temporary injunction were delivered to our compliance department two hours ago. Your personal checking, your corporate line, and the transfer accounts to Nevis are locked solid. I can't even process your mortgage payment."
"Nevis?!" Corbin’s voice hit a high, panicked pitch. "How the hell do they know about Nevis?!"
"I don't know, man, but your wife’s attorney didn't just file standard divorce papers," David warned softly. "They filed a RICO-aligned financial fraud complaint. They attached full transaction logs of your transfers to Victoria Sterling’s Miami shell company. Corbin... who the hell is her lawyer?"
"Harrison Vance," Corbin muttered, his face turning the color of chalk.
"Harrison Vance?!" David gasped. "Corbin, you're in deep shit. Vance doesn't take cases unless he’s holding a loaded gun. Get yourself a criminal defense attorney immediately."
Corbin slammed his phone against the wall, smashing the glass screen.
Just then, his mother, Lorraine, bustled into the master suite through the open door, wearing her silk bathrobe, holding a cup of espresso.
"Corbin, darling! Why aren't you dressed? We need to call the restaurant manager again—" She stopped, looking at the empty closet and her son’s white, terrified face. "Corbin? What happened?"
"She knew, Mom," Corbin whimpered, dropping onto the edge of the bare mattress, burying his head in his hands. "She knew about everything. The accounts, the condo, Victoria... everything."

"What?!" Lorraine screamed, dropping her espresso cup, spilling dark liquid across the cream carpet. "How could that useless little girl know anything?! She’s an architect who spends her day picking out kitchen tiles!"
"She's not useless, Mom," Corbin whispered, a cold terror finally settling into his bones. "She just destroyed me before I even woke up."
