Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empire

At five-thirty that evening, the sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky over Charlotte in bruised shades of deep purple and blood orange.

Outside the iron gates of the massive Ferguson estate in Myers Park, three local television news crews were broadcasting live, reporting on the family’s upcoming legal response to my supposed military misconduct.

Inside the mansion, Patricia Ferguson was sitting in her sprawling marble living room, sipping crystal glasses of champagne with her sons, celebrating what she believed was an overwhelming public victory.

"The District Attorney called," Patricia laughed, swirling her glass. "He said the military is going to relieve that crazy woman of her command by tomorrow morning. By next week, Abigail will be forced into a psychiatric facility, and we will assume total control of her trust fund."

Nicholas smirked, adjusting his neck brace. "I can't wait to see her face when the military police drag her away in handcuffs."

Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble.

THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.

A sound like thunder rolled through the iron gates as four heavy FBI SWAT armored vehicles smashed through the security barricades, tearing the iron gates off their hinges and grinding them into the stone driveway.

"WHAT IS THAT?!" Patricia shrieked, dropping her champagne glass as it shattered on the marble floor.

Before Nicholas or Gregory could move, the front oak double doors of the mansion were blown inward by a breacher charge.

BOOM!

Smoke and flashbang light filled the grand foyer as twenty heavily armed FBI SWAT agents flooded into the mansion, laser sights cutting through the haze, submachine guns raised.

"FBI! ON THE GROUND! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!" screamed the lead SWAT officer.

"ARE YOU INSANE?!" Gregory yelled, holding his bandaged nose. "DO YOU KNOW WHO WE ARE?! CALL THE MAYOR! CALL THE—"

A SWAT operator tackled Gregory to the marble floor, slamming his face into the shattered glass, pulling his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

"NICHOLAS FERGUSON! PATRICIA FERGUSON! YOU ARE UNDER ARREST BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT!"

Patricia stood frozen in horror, her cream-colored suit covered in dust, her hands trembling uncontrollably as two female FBI agents grabbed her arms, forcing her onto her knees.

"This is a mistake!" Patricia screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek. "Where is your warrant?! You can't do this to us! We own this city!"

The crowd of SWAT officers parted.

Stepping through the smoke and dust of the shattered entrance, walking slowly across the marble floor, was me.

I stood over Patricia Ferguson, looking down at her as she knelt in the dirt and shattered glass of her own home. Beside me stood US Attorney Wright, holding a stack of federal forfeiture notices.

"Hello, Patricia," I said softly.

Patricia’s eyes bulged with pure, unadulterated terror. "You... you did this... you brought the FBI here..."

"By order of the United States Federal Court," US Attorney Wright announced in a loud, clear voice, "all assets belonging to Ferguson Global Holdings, including this estate, all bank accounts, vehicles, and business holdings, have been officially seized under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act."

Nicholas sobbed from the floor as an agent pulled him to his feet, his designer suit ruined, his neck brace crooked. "Mom... Mom, do something! They're taking everything!"

Patricia looked up at me, tears streaming down her face, her arrogance completely destroyed, her pride turned into pathetic, whimpering dust.

"Please..." she gasped, begging for the first time in her life. "Rachel... please... think of our family... we can settle this... we can give Abigail millions..."

I leaned down until my face was just inches from hers, my voice dropping into a quiet, lethal whisper that made her entire body shudder.

"You told me my daughter was dramatic, Patricia," I said. "You told me she fell. You told me my military rank didn't frighten you."

May you like

I straightened up, turning my back on her as the agents pulled her to her feet and began dragging her toward the waiting prison vans outside.

"Welcome to the war, Patricia," I said over my shoulder. "You lost."
