Chapter 3 - The Media Serpent

By ten o'clock the next morning, the Ferguson family had launched their first strike.

I sat on the edge of Abigail’s bed upstairs, watching the flat-screen television mounted on the wall. Abigail was awake, sipping hot broth, her left eye still heavily swollen, her hand wrapped in mine.

On the screen was Charlotte Today, a popular local news program.

Patricia Ferguson stood behind a podium in front of her family's multi-million-dollar mansion in Myers Park. She was dressed in black silk, holding a lace handkerchief, looking tearful and heartbroken as dozens of news cameras flashed in front of her. Beside her stood Nicholas, wearing a neck brace, and Gregory, whose broken nose was wrapped in heavy white surgical tape.

"We are devastated," Patricia whimpered into the microphones, her voice shaking with practiced grief. "Last night, my son Nicholas’s wife, Abigail, suffered a severe psychotic break at our home. When we took her to the hospital, her mother—Colonel Rachel Gardner—arrived in full military gear and brutally attacked my sons."

The screen shifted to a high-resolution photograph of my military service record, followed by a photo of me standing in front of my troops in Iraq.

"Colonel Gardner used military-grade hand-to-hand combat against unarmed civilians," the news anchor chimed in smoothly. "Sources close to the District Attorney’s office state that Colonel Gardner is abusing her military authority to shield her daughter from psychological treatment and to cover up an unprovoked attack on one of Charlotte’s most respected families."

Nicholas stepped up to the microphone, wiping a tear from his cheek. "I love my wife," he stammered into the cameras. "I just want Abigail to get the help she needs. Her mother is a dangerous, violent woman who belongs in a military prison."

Abigail slammed her mug onto the nightstand, tears pouring down her cheeks. "They're lying! They're making me look like I'm crazy! Everyone in the city is going to believe them!"

"Shh," I said gently, pulling her into my arms and kissing her forehead. "Let them talk, sweetie."

"Mom, they're destroying us on national TV!" she cried. "Nicholas’s father has friends at CNN and Fox News! They’re going to run this story everywhere!"

"Do you know what a spider does before it strikes, Abigail?" I asked softly, my voice calm and steady. "It lets the fly buzz around, building its own web, making as much noise as it wants. Because the louder the fly buzzes, the more entangled it becomes."

A knock sounded at the bedroom door. Major Lin stepped inside, carrying a black leather folder.

"Colonel," Lin said, a grim smile on her face. "The Fergusons just dug their own grave."

"Explain," I ordered.

"Patricia’s press conference just aired live across three major networks," Lin said, opening the folder. "Because she publicly claimed that you used military violence without provocation, she has elevated this from a local domestic dispute into a matter of national security and federal defamation."

"And?"

"And Captain Vance just finished decrypting the private server of Vanguard Tactical—the security firm Patricia hired to erase the estate’s security footage from last night."

I leaned forward, my eyes narrowing. "Did they recover the footage?"

"Not only did they recover the footage," Lin said, pulling out a USB drive, "they found six months of deleted security files from the Ferguson estate. It shows Nicholas physically assaulting Abigail on three separate occasions. It shows Patricia instructing her house staff to lock Abigail in the guest house. And it shows Gregory explicitly planning to blackmail Abigail with fabricated psychiatric records."

Abigail gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.

I took the USB drive from Major Lin’s hand, feeling the cold weight of the metallic drive in my palm.

"What about the financial division?" I asked.

"Captain Vance’s CID team found forty-seven illegal offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands tied to Ferguson Global Holdings," Lin reported, her tone rising with excitement. "They’ve been laundering money for foreign real estate investors and bribing local zoning officials in Charlotte for eight years. The total tax evasion exceeds eighty million dollars."

I stood up from the bed, smoothing the front of my utility uniform.

"Major Lin," I said.

"Yes, Colonel?"

"Contact the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Field Office in Charlotte. Tell him Colonel Rachel Gardner requests an immediate, high-priority briefing at the Federal Courthouse at fourteen hundred hours."

I looked at Abigail, holding her face in my hands, seeing the hope finally returning to her eyes.

"They wanted a public war, baby," I whispered. "Now we're going to give them one."
