Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Showdown

The atmosphere on the top floor of the Brooks International Tower was electric with tension.
The grand boardroom, featuring a thirty-foot glass wall overlooking the city of Phoenix, was packed with thirty board members, major institutional shareholders, corporate attorneys, and press representatives.
At the head of the conference table sat Richard Brooks, flanked by his legal team and his son, Julian. Richard looked like a man preparing to claim his throne, his face glowing with arrogant confidence.
At 8:55 AM, the double mahogany doors swung open.
Nathan Brooks walked into the room. He wore a crisp black suit, his expression cold, commanding, and absolute.
Beside him walked Emily.
She wore a striking cobalt-blue dress, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, powerful ponytail. She carried a leather briefcase in her right hand. Her posture was completely rigid, her eyes scanning the room with calm authority.
A murmur of surprised whispers swept through the board members.
"Nathan," Richard said, standing up and spreading his hands with performative pity. "We are all deeply saddened by your mother’s passing early this morning. But business does not stop for grief. Under Section 4 of the Trust Agreement, since Victoria passed without an officially ratified proxy transfer filed twenty-four hours prior, her fifty-one percent voting share defaults to the Executive Board."
"Your math is incorrect, Richard," Nathan said calmly, taking his seat at the opposite end of the long table while Emily stood directly behind his shoulder. "My mother executed a signed proxy transfer late last night, transferring her entire voting block to my legal spouse, Emily Brooks."
Richard let out a booming, theatrical laugh that echoed off the glass walls.
"Your legal spouse?" Richard sneered, pulling a thick Manila folder from his briefcase and slamming it onto the center of the table. "Ladies and gentlemen of the board! I present to you the so-called 'Mrs. Brooks'!"
Richard pointed a finger aggressively at Emily.
"Her real name is Emily Parker! Four days ago, my nephew picked her up off the side of the interstate in Tucson! She is an unemployed, homeless vagrant with forty-seven cents to her name! She has a record of extreme poverty, she has no background in business, and this entire marriage is a fraudulent, manufactured sham designed to steal control of this company!"
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Shareholders stood up, shouting questions at Nathan, while news reporters frantically snapped photos of Emily.
Julian Brooks smirked, leaning back in his chair. "You're finished, Nathan! The court will void this marriage within an hour! You put a beggar on our family throne!"
Nathan started to stand up, his jaw clenched in rage, but before he could speak, Emily placed a hand firmly on his shoulder.
She pressed him back down into his seat.
Then, Emily stepped forward, walking calmly to the center of the boardroom. She picked up the Manila folder Richard had slammed onto the table, skimmed its contents, and tossed it casually into the recycling bin near the door.
The entire room fell dead silent at her composure.
"Mr. Richard Brooks," Emily spoke, her voice ringing out like a crystal bell, cutting through the murmurs with absolute dominance. "You are correct about one thing. Four days ago, I was standing on a highway with forty-seven cents in my pocket and two hungry children at my side."
She turned, looking directly into the cameras of the press pool, her eyes burning with fierce pride.
"I have scrubbed floors. I have worked eighteen-hour shifts in diners. I have slept in the back of a broken-down car to keep my children warm. I know what it means to calculate every penny just to buy a loaf of bread."
She turned back to face Richard, her expression dropping into a cold, lethal glare.
"And because I know the value of a single dollar, I also know how much money you have been stealing from this company for the last five years."
Richard’s face instantly drained of all color. "What... what are you talking about?"
Emily opened her leather briefcase, pulling out a stack of financial documents, and tossed them directly in front of the lead institutional shareholder, a representative from Vanguard Holdings.
"While your private investigators were digging through my past in New Mexico," Emily said smoothly, "Nathan’s forensic accountants and I were digging through yours. These are the offshore shell company records for Apex Logistics—a vendor based in the Cayman Islands that has billed Brooks International forty-two million dollars over the last forty-eight months for 'equipment maintenance'."
She walked up to Richard, leaning over the table, her face inches from his.
"Apex Logistics is registered under your son Julian’s middle name, Richard. You've been embezzling corporate funds to buy your votes on this board."
The Vanguard representative gasped, staring at the bank statements. "This... this is an embankment trail! Millions of dollars transferred directly to private accounts!"
"That's a lie!" Julian screamed, standing up, his face pale with horror. "She fabricated those!"
"The Federal Bureau of Investigation didn't think they were fabricated when we submitted them at seven o'clock this morning," Nathan added calmly, standing up to join his wife at the center of the room.
At that exact moment, the double doors of the boardroom were pushed open once again.
Four federal agents in dark suits walked into the room, accompanied by two officers from the Phoenix Police Department.
"Richard Brooks? Julian Brooks?" the lead federal agent announced, pulling out two arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement."
The room descended into wild excitement as the agents pulled Richard and Julian from their seats, clicking steel handcuffs around their wrists in front of thirty flashing press cameras.

As Richard was led past Emily, his face contorted in defeated, hopeless rage, Emily stepped closer to him, whispering in his ear:
"I told you, Mr. Brooks... spending time in the gutter builds character. Enjoy your stay."
