Chapter 4 - The Final Breath

The private room on the top floor of St. Joseph’s Medical Center was quiet, saved only by the rhythmic, hollow beep of the heart monitor and the soft hiss of the oxygen machine.
Victoria Brooks lay in the center of the bed, her frame frail, her skin pale as porcelain. Yet, despite her advanced illness, there was an unmistakable air of regal dignity about her.
Nathan moved to the side of the bed, taking his mother's thin, cold hand in his own.
"Mother," Nathan whispered, his voice trembling with a rare display of raw emotion. "I'm here."
Victoria’s eyelids fluttered open slowly. Her dark eyes, clouded with fatigue, moved from Nathan’s face to the doorway, where Emily stood quietly, allowing the mother and son their private moment.
Victoria made a faint motion with her hand, pointing weakly toward Emily.
"Nathan..." Victoria’s voice was a frail rasp. "Who... is she?"
Nathan stood up, reaching out his hand toward Emily. "Mother, this is Emily. My wife."
Emily hesitated for a fraction of a second before stepping forward. She walked to the other side of the bed and gently placed her hand over Victoria’s frail fingers.
Victoria looked at Emily long and hard. She looked at Emily’s hands—not the pristine, untouched hands of the elite women who usually frequented her social circles, but hands that showed strength, resilience, and deep care.
"Your... wife?" Victoria whispered, a small, knowing glint appearing in her tired eyes. "Richard... told me... you bought a woman... from the street... to steal my shares..."
Nathan’s jaw tightened in anger. "Richard is a liar, Mother. He has been trying to strip this family of everything you built."
Victoria turned her head slowly toward Emily. "Is it true, child? Are you... here for the money?"
Emily didn't blink. She looked directly into the dying matriarch’s eyes with total, unvarnished honesty.
"Mrs. Brooks," Emily said softly, her voice filled with quiet grace. "When your son found me, my children were starving on a highway. I had forty-seven cents to my name. He offered me a way to save my children, and in return, I promised to help him protect you and your legacy."
She took a deep breath, her eyes brimming with sincere emotion.
"I may not have come from wealth, and I may not have been born into your world. But I love your son. I see the man he is when no one is watching—the man who carries my sleeping daughter, the man who listens to my son's dreams, the man who would burn his own life down before letting his family hurt you. I will stand by him, Mrs. Brooks. Whether he has fifty-one percent of the company or zero."
A long, heavy silence stretched across the room. The heart monitor beeped steadily in the background.
Slowly, a soft, beautiful smile spread across Victoria’s face.
She lifted her weak hand, pressing Emily’s fingers against Nathan’s hand, uniting them over her heart.
"He... found... a real woman," Victoria whispered, a single tear slipping down her pale cheek. "Not a politician... a mother. A protector."
She looked at Nathan, her eyes filling with profound peace.
"Give her... the shares, Nathan," Victoria rasped, her breathing growing slower, heavier. "Give her... my proxy. Protect... each other..."
Ten minutes later, as the first rays of dawn began to break over the Phoenix skyline, the heart monitor let out a long, continuous tone.
Victoria Brooks passed away peacefully, holding her son’s hand on one side, and her daughter-in-law’s on the other.
Nathan stood motionless in the quiet room, his head bowed, his shoulders shaking subtly with silent grief.
Emily didn't say a word. She didn't offer empty platitudes or hollow comforts. She simply moved around the bed, wrapped her arms around Nathan’s chest from behind, and rested her forehead against his back, offering him the silent, immovable strength of a partner who was not going anywhere.
Nathan turned around in her arms, burying his face in the crook of her neck, clinging to her as the storm finally broke inside him.
Outside the hospital door, standing at the end of the long corridor, Richard Brooks lowered his phone. A cold, victorious smile spread across his face as he watched the head nurse walk into Victoria's room to record the time of death.

He pulled up his contacts and dialed his lead attorney.
"Victoria is dead," Richard whispered into the phone, his voice dripping with venomous glee. "Execute the emergency board meeting for nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Nathan thinks he's safe with his fake marriage... but I just secured the original police record of Emily Parker’s arrest three years ago for vagrancy. Tomorrow, I will destroy them both in front of the entire board."
