Chapter 2 - The Lion's Den

The transformation took less than twenty-four hours.
By noon the following day, Emily stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror in the master guest suite of Brooks Manor. Gone was the sun-bleached, dusty woman from the highway. In her place stood a striking figure dressed in a tailored emerald-green silk dress that complemented her fair skin and dark hair. A delicate diamond pendant rested at the base of her throat, and her hair had been styled into an elegant, effortless chignon.
In the adjacent room, Lily was giggling as a private chef served her stack after stack of blueberry pancakes, while Noah was sitting on a plush leather sofa, reading an encyclopedia of mechanical engineering that Nathan’s staff had provided for him.
A soft knock sounded at her door.
Nathan stepped into the room. He wore a crisp gray suit, his dark hair brushed back, his posture immaculate. For a moment, as his eyes swept over her, his usual stoic expression wavered.
"You look... extraordinary," Nathan said, his voice dropping slightly.
Emily adjusted the heavy platinum band on her left ring finger—the ring Nathan had placed on her hand three hours ago in a private fifteen-minute ceremony conducted by a licensed justice of the peace inside the estate library.
"I feel like an imposter," Emily admitted, looking at her reflection. "My hands still feel rough. Every time a servant speaks to me, I feel like I should be apologizing for being in the room."
Nathan walked over, stopping three feet behind her. In the mirror, their eyes met.
"You are not an imposter, Emily," Nathan said firmly. "You are Mrs. Emily Brooks. The bank transfer of one million dollars cleared into your account thirty minutes ago. You owe no one an explanation, and you bow to no one in this house."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a leather folder containing a dossier.
"Tonight is our first test," Nathan said, his tone growing serious. "My uncle Richard has called an emergency family dinner at his residence in Paradise Valley. He claims it is to 'discuss my mother's comfort,' but in reality, it is a trap. He suspects I am hiding something."
"What does he know about me?" Emily asked, taking the folder.
"Nothing yet," Nathan replied. "I had my legal team seal your records. As far as my family is concerned, we met eighteen months ago while you were working as a private healthcare consultant in California. We fell in love, married quietly due to my mother’s declining health, and brought your children into my home to create a stable family environment."
Emily opened the folder, scanning the faces of the people she was about to face.
Richard Brooks—sixty-two years old, sharp-featured, ruthless, with a history of corporate restructuring that had left thousands unemployed. Beside his picture was his wife, Evelyn, a prominent socialite known for destroying anyone who threatened her family's social standing, and their thirty-year-old son, Julian, an ambitious executive director at Brooks International.
"They will look for any weakness," Nathan warned her. "They will ask detailed questions about your past, your family background, your education. If they sense fear, they will attack."
Emily closed the folder, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce determination.
"Mr. Brooks," Emily said softly, "for the last three years, I’ve dealt with slumlords who turned off my water in the middle of winter, employers who stole my wages because they knew I couldn't afford a lawyer, and loan sharks who threatened to throw my belongings into the street. Your uncle wears a expensive suit, but he is just another bully with money. He doesn't frighten me."
A genuine, rare smile broke across Nathan’s face, illuminating his sharp features.
"Good," Nathan said, offering her his arm. "Then let's go to dinner."
An hour later, the black sedan pulled up to the grand entrance of Richard Brooks's estate. The house was a modern glass-and-steel monstrosity built into the side of a mountain, glowing like an aggressive beacon against the desert night.
A butler escorted Nathan and Emily into a massive dining room where Richard, Evelyn, and Julian were already seated at a long marble table.
The moment Nathan and Emily walked through the doors, the atmosphere in the room turned ice-cold.
Richard Brooks slowly set his wine glass down, his narrow eyes locking onto Emily with immediate, predatory suspicion.
"Nathan," Richard said, his voice smooth and laced with venom. "We were expecting you an hour ago. And who... is this woman?"
Nathan led Emily to the head of the table, pulling out a chair for her with deliberate care before taking his own seat beside her.
"Richard, Evelyn, Julian," Nathan announced calmly, looking around the table. "I would like you to meet my wife, Emily. We were married this morning."
A loud, sharp gasp echoed from Evelyn. Julian nearly choked on his water.
Richard’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage, though he quickly forced his features back into a tight, unnatural smile.
"Your wife?" Richard sneered. "Nathan, my dear nephew... my sister is dying in a hospital bed, and you expect us to believe you went off and got married to an unknown woman overnight? Is this some desperate attempt to manipulate the family trust before next week's board vote?"
Emily felt a cold prickle of tension on her neck, but she remembered the forty-seven cents in her pocket, she remembered her children safe in their beds, and she remembered who she was.
She leaned forward, placing her hands neatly on the marble table, her platinum wedding ring catching the light of the chandelier.
"Mr. Brooks," Emily spoke, her voice clear, melodious, and entirely unfazed. "Nathan and I have been together for over a year. We kept our relationship private out of respect for Victoria’s health. If you consider my presence here a 'manipulation,' that says far more about your anxieties regarding the company's future than it does about my marriage."
Evelyn glared at Emily, her eyes scanning Emily’s green dress with contemptuous scrutiny. "And where, exactly, do your people come from, my dear? What is your family name? What board do you sit on?"
Emily smiled smoothly. "My family built their legacy on honest work, Mrs. Brooks. Something I imagine you haven't had to think about in quite some time."
Julian slammed his fork down. "This is absurd! She's a nobody! Nathan pulled her out of thin air!"
"She is my wife," Nathan snapped, his voice ringing through the dining room like a thunderclap. Every person at the table froze. "And under Section 4 of the Brooks Family Settlement Trust, her legal status as my spouse transfers my mother's voting proxy directly to me upon her incapacity."
Richard slowly stood up, leaning over the table, his eyes fixed on Emily like a hawk watching its prey.
"Enjoy your dinner, my dear," Richard whispered maliciously. "Because my investigators are already digging into your past. And when I find out who you really are, I won't just throw you out of this family... I will make sure you and your children end up back in whatever gutter Nathan found you in."
May you like
Emily didn't flinch. She met Richard's venomous gaze with total composure.
"I've been in the gutter, Mr. Brooks," Emily replied softly. "It builds character. You should try spending some time there."
