Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

One year later.
The sun shone brightly over the manicured gardens of the Kane Estate, a breathtaking manor overlooking the glittering bay. The sound of children's laughter echoed through the air.
Rory, now five and a half, was running across the lush green lawn, wearing a beautiful yellow sundress. Behind her, a massive golden retriever chased her, its tail wagging frantically.
On the veranda, Mara sat at a white wrought-iron table, sipping a cup of tea. She wore a simple, elegant cream dress, her face radiant, the hollow lines of exhaustion completely gone. She looked healthy, beautiful, and deeply at peace.
A pair of strong, familiar hands gently rested on her shoulders.
Vincent leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. He had discarded his tie, his top button undone, looking relaxed in a way he had never been before he met the brave little girl in the red hoodie and her resilient mother.
"What are you thinking about?" Vincent asked, his deep voice wrapping around her like a warm blanket.
"Just... how much can change in a year," Mara said, reaching up to cover his hand with her own. "A year ago, I was skipping meals so my daughter could eat. I was terrified of tomorrow. And now..."
"And now, you never have to worry about tomorrow again," Vincent said, pulling up a chair and sitting beside her, his eyes locked onto hers with a fierce, unwavering devotion.
From the lawn, Rory suddenly stopped running. She looked up at the veranda, her face lighting up with a massive grin. She ran up the stone steps, her little shoes squeaking, and threw herself directly into Vincent's lap.
"Daddy!" she giggled, wrapping her small arms around his neck.
Vincent’s heart, once a cold stone built for survival in a ruthless city, melted entirely. He hugged her tightly, kissing the top of her head.
"Yes, my little lion?" he smiled.
"Are we going to get ice cream today? You promised!"
"We are," Vincent laughed. "And you can have as many scoops as you want. With extra purple sprinkles."
Rory clapped her hands in delight. "And Mommy too! Mommy gets three scoops because she doesn't have to be on a diet anymore!"
Mara laughed, a bright, beautiful sound that filled the afternoon air. She reached across the table, taking Vincent’s hand.
