Chapter 3 - The Rising Shadow

Within three weeks, the transformation of Mara Carter’s life was nothing short of miraculous.

The apartment Vincent had provided was located in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood uptown. It had large windows that let in the morning sun, a kitchen stocked with actual food, and a small bedroom for Rory that was painted a soft pastel blue. For the first time in years, Mara didn't wake up with a knot of panic in her stomach.

At the Kane Enterprises headquarters, she excelled. She managed the executive floor with a quiet grace and efficiency that quickly earned the respect of the staff. But more than anything, she looked forward to the late afternoons when Vincent would return from his meetings.

He was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. He would often stop by her desk, ask how Rory was doing in her new preschool, and occasionally leave a small toy or a book on her desk "for the kid."

But the peace was not meant to last.

In the high-society circles of the city, rumors of Vincent Kane’s sudden interest in a common waitress had begun to spread. And no one was more furious about this than Victoria Vance.

Victoria was the daughter of Arthur Vance, the head of the powerful Vance Group. For years, there had been an unspoken expectation that Vincent Kane and Victoria Vance would eventually marry, uniting the two most powerful empires in the city. Victoria was a woman of cold ambition, accustomed to getting exactly what she wanted.

"A waitress, Vincent?" Victoria hissed, slamming her designer handbag onto his desk. She had bypassed his security, her name still carrying enough weight to get her past the front lobby. "You are making a mockery of our families. The press is starting to ask questions. They’re calling her your 'Cinderella'."

Vincent didn't look up from his tablet. "If the press is talking, it’s because you are feeding them, Victoria."

"She is a nobody!" Victoria snarled, her face contorting with rage. "She has a kid from some deadbeat who ran out on her. She is a parasite trying to claw her way into your world. If you think I’m going to let some charity case ruin my future, you’re mistaken."

Vincent slowly set his tablet down. The quiet intensity in his eyes made Victoria step back instinctively.

"Mara Carter is an employee of this company," Vincent said, his voice dangerously low. "And Rory is a child. If I hear your name associated with any rumor regarding them again, I will personally audit the Vance Group's offshore accounts. And we both know what the feds would find there."

Victoria’s breath hitched. She tightened her grip on her purse, her eyes burning with a deep, vengeful hatred. "You’re protecting her. You actually care about her."

"Get out of my office, Victoria," Vincent said.

As Victoria stormed out, she passed Mara, who was carrying a tray of coffee. Victoria stopped, leaning in close, her voice a poisonous whisper. "Enjoy your little fairytale while it lasts, sweetheart. Because when I tear it down, you and your brat will be back in the gutter where you belong."

Mara held her ground, refusing to let the woman see her shake. But as Victoria walked away, a cold dread began to settle in her chest. She knew women like Victoria. They didn't just make threats; they acted on them.
