Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at the Docks

The warehouse on Pier 42 was cold, smelling of salt, rust, and rotting wood.

Mara stumbled through the shattered glass of the entrance, her voice hoarse from crying. "Rory! Rory, where are you?!"

"She's not here, you stupid bitch," a voice sneered from the shadows.

Victoria Vance stepped out from behind a stack of rusted shipping containers. Beside her stood three burly men holding heavy iron pipes, and Richard Sterling, his face still bruised and swollen from his encounter with Marco weeks ago. Sterling had a wild, manic look in his eyes—the look of a man who had lost everything and had nothing left to lose.

"You," Mara whispered, backing up as the men surrounded her. "Where is my daughter?"

"She's safe at her school, completely oblivious," Victoria laughed, her voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "We didn't need to kidnap the brat. We just needed a bait that would make you run without thinking. And you fell for it beautifully."

"Why?" Mara cried. "Why are you doing this to us?"

"Because you don't belong here!" Victoria screamed, her elegant face twisting into something hideous. "You are a stain on Vincent’s reputation! Once you are gone—permanently—he will realize his mistake. He will come back to me. Richard here wants his revenge, and I want you erased."

Richard Sterling stepped forward, a cruel, mocking smile on his face. He raised a heavy metal pipe. "You ruined my life, Mara. I lost my restaurant, my car, my status. All because of you and your little rat. Tonight, I get it all back."

Mara closed her eyes, preparing for the blow, whispering a silent prayer for Rory.

But the blow never came.

Instead, the massive wooden doors of the warehouse were violently blown inward. A deafening blast shook the entire structure as two black armored SUVs crashed through the entrance, wood and metal splinters flying everywhere.

Before the dust could even settle, heavily armed men in black tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, their red laser sights instantly painting the chests of Victoria’s thugs.

"Drop your weapons!" Marco’s voice boomed like thunder. "Now, or you die where you stand!"

The three hired thugs instantly dropped their pipes, raising their hands in sheer terror.

From the lead SUV, Vincent Kane stepped out.

He didn't wear his usual suit jacket. His sleeves were rolled up, revealing powerful, corded forearms. His eyes were locked onto Mara, ensuring she was unharmed. Once he saw she was intact, his gaze drifted to Victoria and Richard.

"Vincent!" Victoria gasped, her face turning translucent with fear. "Vincent, I... I can explain! This woman, she—"

"Be quiet, Victoria," Vincent said. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer weight of his presence made her choke on her words.

He walked slowly toward Richard Sterling. Sterling, trembling violently, tried to raise his pipe, but Vincent didn't even flinch. With a movement so fast the eye could barely follow, Vincent snatched the pipe from Sterling’s hand, threw it aside, and grabbed him by the throat, slamming him against a shipping container.

"I gave you a chance, Richard," Vincent whispered, his face inches from Sterling's. "I took your money, your car, your pride. But I let you keep your life. You should have left the state."

"Please... please, Vincent..." Sterling choked out, his eyes bulging.

"Marco," Vincent called out, not looking back. "Call the District Attorney. Tell him we have the missing financial records of the Vance Group’s offshore tax evasion, along with Victoria Vance and Richard Sterling caught on camera attempting a kidnapping and extortion."

Victoria gasped, stumbling backward. "No! You can't do this! My father will destroy you!"

"Your father is currently being arrested at his golf club," Vincent said coldly, throwing Sterling to the ground like a piece of trash. "The Vance Group is finished, Victoria. By tomorrow morning, your family assets will be frozen, and your name will be mud. You are going to prison. Both of you."

He turned away from them, walking directly to Mara.

She was trembling, her tears flowing freely now. Without a word, Vincent reached out and pulled her into his chest. He wrapped his strong arms around her, shielding her from the cold, from the fear, and from the ugly world she had been forced to fight for so long.

"It’s over, Mara," he murmured into her hair, his voice softer than anyone had ever heard it. "You're safe. I’ve got you."
