Chapter 6 - The Sweet Taste of Freedom

As the evening sun began to dip below the Chicago skyline, casting long, golden shadows across the bakery floor, the last of the customers left. I walked out to the outdoor patio, holding a warm cup of coffee, breathing in the fresh air.

A handsome man in a simple linen shirt paused by the patio railing, looking at the sign on the door, then at me. It was Dr. David Vance, the orthopedic surgeon who had painstakingly stitched my leg back together on that horrific afternoon six months ago. He had given me his personal number back then, not knowing my financial status, simply wanting to ensure his patient was healing safely from an abusive situation.

"Well, look at you," David smiled, his eyes warm and genuinely caring. "Standing completely on your own two feet. No limp, no splint."

"Thanks to a very talented doctor," I laughed softly, gesturing for him to sit down at the patio table. "Would you like a fresh strawberry pastry? On the house."

"Only if you promise to sit down and enjoy it with me," David said, pulling out a chair for me with an effortless, respectful gallantry. "You've been running around all day, Madison. You deserve to be taken care of for once."

I looked at him—a man who saw me when I was broken, who respected my boundaries, and who didn't care about the corporate empire hiding behind my flour-stained apron.

"I'd love to," I said, sitting down, feeling the warm Chicago breeze against my face.

The ground beneath my feet was no longer collapsing. It was solid, unbreakable, and entirely mine. I had survived the crash, dismantled the predators, and built a life where the sweetest investment was, and always would be, myself.
