Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Light

Six months later.

The air in downtown Chicago was crisp and filled with the scent of roasted cinnamon and melted sugar. The grand reopening of Madison's Sweet Haven was a massive success. The bakery had been completely renovated, featuring a beautiful outdoor seating area with custom-built ramps and smooth pathways.

I stood behind the counter, no longer wearing a hospital gown or a splint. My leg had healed perfectly after months of physical therapy, though I still walked with a slow, confident grace that commanded respect. I wore a simple white apron over a designer silk blouse—a perfect blend of the baker I loved being and the billionaire I actually was.

Chloe walked in, carrying a fresh bouquet of flowers, followed by Vivian Brooks.

"Look at this crowd!" Chloe beamed, hugging me. "The Chicago Tribune just rated your vanilla tarts the best in the city."

"And the board of Apex Vanguard is wondering when their Chairman is returning to the office," Vivian smiled, handing me a financial report. "Core Dynamics has stabilized under the new management, Madison. We’ve recovered all the funds Ethan embezzled."

"Where is he now?" I asked out of casual curiosity, wiping down the counter.

"Working as a night-shift telemarketer," Vivian replied, her tone indifferent. "He lives in a cramped one-bedroom apartment with Margaret. From what the investigators say, she spends all day screaming at him because he can't afford her low-sodium catering anymore. It seems they are finally trapped in the hell they created for each other."

I felt no joy in their misery, only a profound sense of peace. They were exactly where they belonged, and so was I.
