Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Empire

The dining room was so quiet you could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator down the hall. Patricia’s guests stared at the screen in absolute horror. The sophisticated socialites who had praised her moments before now shrank back in their seats, looking at Patricia as if she were a toxic stranger.

Patricia’s hands began to shake violently. She stared at the monitor, then at me, realizing with absolute finality that her carefully constructed web of lies had completely unraveled.

“David... please,” she whispered, her voice cracking as she lunged forward to grab my sleeve. “It’s not what it looks like! The stress... the pressure of trying to be a good mother to girls who didn't want me—it got to me! I love you! I love them!”

I gently but firmly pulled my arm away from her grip, stepping back as if her touch were contagious.

“You don't know the meaning of love, Patricia,” I said quietly. “You only know control. And you chose the wrong family to practice it on.”

I turned to her stunned guests, offering a polite, composed nod. “I apologize for cutting this dinner short. My security team will escort you out. Please consider yourselves free to leave whenever you wish.”

Within ten minutes, the luxury cars were speeding down the driveway, one by one, carrying away the witnesses to Patricia’s public humiliation.

Patricia stood alone in the center of the grand dining room, her expensive designer dress looking like a theatrical costume for a play that had just been canceled. My chief of security stepped forward, flanked by two private estate guards.

“Pack your things, Miss Patricia,” my chief said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. “My men will escort you to the front gates. If you attempt to return, or if you ever contact Mr. Vance or his daughters again, the legal consequences will be swift and absolute.”

Patricia opened her mouth to scream, to threaten, to beg once more—but looking into my eyes, she saw a wall of ice so absolute that she knew any further words were useless. Without another sound, she turned, rushed up the stairs to her room to gather her belongings, and left the estate within the hour.

As the heavy front doors closed behind her for the very last time, a profound, breathtaking silence settled over the mansion. It wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence of fear that my daughters had lived in for months. It was the pure, clean silence of a house finally purged of poison.

I stood in the foyer for a long moment, breathing in the fresh night air, before turning toward the staircase that led to the girls' rooms.
