Chapter 2 - The Silent House of Shadows

The live feed continued to glow in the dim light of the security room, casting a cold, blue tint across the face of my chief of security and myself. On the monitor, Patricia’s posture had shifted from the poised, elegant woman I thought I knew to something predatory. Her shoulders were squared, her chin lifted with arrogant authority, and her eyes scanned the room like a warden surveying prisoners.

“Rosa,” Patricia said, her voice dripping with calculated venom, “take the girls to their rooms. And make sure they stay there until dinner. I have guests coming over later, and I do not want to hear a single peep from either of them. If I hear footsteps, you will be the one packing your bags, not them.”

Rosa did not flinch, though a muscle twitched in her jaw. She knelt beside Martina and Daniela, placing her hands gently on their shoulders. Her touch was warm, steady, and filled with an unspoken reassurance that immediately caused the tension in my daughters’ small bodies to ease.

“Yes, Miss Patricia,” Rosa replied quietly, keeping her gaze lowered just enough to feed Patricia’s ego while retaining her own quiet dignity.

She herded the girls upstairs toward the east wing. As they walked out of camera range, I felt a heavy, suffocating weight press down on my chest. How many times had I been sitting in my executive office downtown, entirely convinced that Rosa was the one poisoning the atmosphere of my home, while Patricia played the role of the nurturing stepmother-to-be?

I turned to my security chief, my voice trembling with a mixture of fury and self-loathing. “Pull up the archives. The past three months. Every camera in the house. Now.”

For the next two hours, the security room became a chamber of horrors.

We fast-forwarded through weeks of footage. I watched in agonizing silence as Patricia’s true colors unspooled across the monitors. When I was home, she was a masterpiece of affection—touching my arm, speaking in a melodic whisper, praising my daughters with a fake sweetness that could fool anyone. But the moment my car passed through the security gates, the transformation was instantaneous.

I watched her tear up Martina’s drawings because they were left on the coffee table. I watched her force Daniela to stand facing a corner for an entire hour because she spilled a glass of water. I saw her withhold meals, substitute dinner with dry bread, and whisper cruel, poisonous words into my daughters' ears: ‘Your father only keeps you around out of obligation. If you tell him anything, he will send you away forever.’

My hands curled into fists so tight my fingernails dug deep into my palms, drawing faint beads of blood. I had built an empire in the corporate world, managing billion-dollar negotiations, yet I had been completely blind to the monster I had invited into my bed and my children's lives. The doubt Patricia had sown about Rosa was nothing more than psychological projection. Rosa wasn't turning my daughters against me; she was the only shield standing between them and absolute psychological destruction.

“Sir,” my security chief broke the heavy silence, his voice cautious. “What are your orders?”

I stared at the monitors, where Patricia was now on her phone in the living room, laughing brightly with someone on the other end, her face flushed with excitement about the evening's upcoming party.

“My orders,” I whispered, my voice cold enough to freeze glass, “are to let her play her game to the very end. But tonight, the rules of the house change.”
