Chapter 6 - The Dark Before DawnThe safehouse was a secluded timber cabin nestled in the quiet pine forests near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

It was pitch black when my SUV pulled up the dirt driveway. I cut the engine and sat in the darkness for a long moment, feeling the adrenaline of the evening slowly bleed out of me. The Vale empire was crumbling in Chicago as federal agents raided the estate and froze the syndicate's assets. Senator Hart was in custody, Camille was facing conspiracy charges, and Lorenzo was currently under hospital arrest after suffering a massive stress-induced stroke.
I had destroyed the dragon. But as I looked at the warm, soft light shining through the cabin window, I realized the hardest battle was still ahead of me: winning back the hearts of the people I loved.
I stepped out of the car, my dress shoes crunching against the light snow on the ground, and walked up to the porch.
The door opened before I could even knock.
Maya stood in the doorway, framed by the warm glow of the living room fire. She was wearing an oversized sweater, her dark hair tumbling over her shoulders. She looked at me—not with fear, and not with anger—but with a quiet, solemn intensity.
"Dominic called me," she said softly. "He told me what happened at the Drake Hotel."
"It's over, Maya," I said, stopping a few feet away from her on the porch, the cold night air rushing between us. "The syndicate is finished. My grandfather, the Harts... none of them will ever threaten you or the kids again. I gave everything to the authorities."
Maya stared at me, her green eyes searching my face. "You burned down your entire life, Adrian. You gave up billions. You gave up your status. Why?"
"Because none of it meant anything without you," I said, my voice trembling with raw, unfiltered honesty. "I lived in a palace for four years, Maya, and it felt like a prison cell because you weren't in it. I don't care about the money. I don't care about the power. I just want a chance to be a father to my children... and to prove to you that I can be the man you always deserved."
Tears welling in her green eyes, Maya stepped out onto the cold porch. "I was so angry at you for four years, Adrian. I hated you for every lonely night, every time I cried in the bathroom so the kids wouldn't hear me."
"I know," I whispered, tears blurring my own vision. "And you have every right to hate me forever."
"I wanted to hate you," she sobbed softly, taking a step closer. "But when I saw you look at Liam yesterday... when I saw the pain and love in your eyes... I realized you were just as much a victim of their poisonous games as I was."
I couldn't hold back anymore. I took a step forward and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close against my chest. She buried her face into the crook of my neck, her shoulders shaking as she wept four years of buried pain, grief, and exhaustion away.
I held her tight, resting my chin on her head, breathing in the scent of lavender and vanilla that I had missed for four excruciating years.
"I'm sorry," I murmured again and again, kissing her hair. "I'm so sorry, Maya. I'm never letting you go again."
After a long moment, she pulled back slightly, wiping her tears with her sleeves, a small, beautiful smile breaking through her grief.

"You should come inside," she whispered, taking my hand. "Three little people woke up an hour ago and refused to go back to sleep until they knew if the man with their eyes was coming."
My heart soared, a feeling of light bursting through the dark clouds that had shadowed my soul for years. I squeezed her hand tightly and followed her inside.
