Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a LieThe wind blowing off Lake Michigan felt like ice against my face, but it couldn't cool the fire burning in my veins.

"Mommy... he has my eyes."

The small, earnest voice of my son—my son—echoed through the cold park air like a gunshot. I couldn't tear my eyes away from him. He had my dark hair, my square jaw, and those distinct, steel-gray eyes that every Vale male had carried for generations. Beside him, his sister and brother stared up at me with identical gazes. Three children. Three innocent lives born from the love I had crushed four years ago.

I took a step forward, my hand extending instinctively toward the stroller. "Maya..."

"Don't touch them, Adrian!" Maya snapped, stepping in front of the triple stroller like a lioness shielding her cubs. Her breath hitched, ragged and terrified, as her knuckles turned white against the faded handlebar. "You lost the right to speak to them—or to me—the day you had your grandfather’s guard dogs throw me onto the street!"

"I didn't know," I choked out, the words feeling thick and useless in my throat. "Maya, on my life, I thought you vanished with the money. I thought you sold me out to the Moretti family!"

"And you believed them over me," she whispered, her green eyes shining with unshed tears that burned with anger rather than sorrow. "You chose your family's empire over me. You called me a mistake, Adrian. You told me to take my dignity and disappear. So I did. I rebuilt my life from absolute zero while raising your triplets in a tiny one-bedroom apartment, working twelve-hour shifts just to afford formula!"

Before I could answer, the sharp, rhythmic click of designer heels echoed against the stone path behind us.

"Adrian, darling, what on earth is going on?" Camille’s polished voice cut through the tension. She glided up beside me, draped in her thousand-dollar cashmere coat, her five-carat diamond ring catching the dim sunlight.

I turned my head slightly to look at my fiancée. I expected confusion. I expected shock. I expected her to ask who this woman was and why I was chasing a triple stroller through Grant Park.

Instead, I saw Camille’s posture stiffen. Her lips thinned into a pale, tight line. Her eyes didn't land on Maya; they locked onto the three children with a cold, calculating disgust that lasted for a split second before she masked it with a forced smile.

She already knew.

The realization hit me like a physical blow. My grandfather hadn't worked alone four years ago.

"Camille," I said, my voice dropping an octave into the dark, dangerous register I usually reserved for boardrooms and back-alley interrogations. "You know who she is."

Camille gasped subtly, pressing a manicured hand to her chest. "Adrian, don't be ridiculous! How could I possibly know this... this woman? She looks like a beggar. Is she trying to extort you? Is she claiming those street urchins are yours?"

"Shut up," I growled, stepping into her space. "Look at their eyes, Camille. Look at them and tell me you don't recognize my blood."

Maya took a step back, pulling the stroller with her. "I don't want your money, Adrian. I don't want your dark, bloody empire. I just want you to leave us alone."

"I'm not letting you walk away again," I said, turning back to Maya, my chest aching. "Not when I just found out I have a family."

"Family?" Maya let out a harsh, sarcastic laugh. "You're getting married, Adrian! Look at her! Look at your life! You belong in high society and shadow deals. We belong in a world where we don't have to look over our shoulders every time a black SUV drives by!"

"Mommy, I'm scared," the little girl murmured, clutching a worn-out plush rabbit to her chest.

Maya instantly softened, kneeling beside the stroller to smooth down her daughter's dark curls. "It's okay, Leo. Mommy's here. We're leaving now."

"Maya, wait—" I reached for her arm, but two men in tailored suits suddenly emerged from the trees behind Camille. My personal security detail, hired by my family to monitor my movements under the guise of protection.

"Mr. Vale," the head guard, Marcus, said in a flat tone. "Your grandfather requested that you return to the estate immediately. The wedding rehearsal dinner arrangements are waiting."

Maya looked at the armed guards, her face draining of what little color remained. "See? Nothing has changed. You're still a prisoner in your own golden cage."

She didn't wait for my response. Pushing the heavy triple stroller with a frantic strength born of pure desperation, she hurried down the path, disappearing into the thick Chicago fog before I could stop her.

I made to move after her, but Camille placed a firm hand on my forearm.

"Let her go, Adrian," Camille hissed softly, her aristocratic composure slipping just enough to reveal the icy ambition beneath. "She’s a ghost from your past. If the press finds out you have illegitimate children with a nobody, it will destroy the merger between the Hart Corporation and the Vale Syndicate. Your grandfather will never allow it."

I looked down at Camille's hand on my arm. The five-carat ring looked less like a symbol of love and more like a pair of golden handcuffs.

"My grandfather doesn't rule my life anymore," I said, my voice trembling with a quiet, lethal rage. I yanked my arm out of her grip. "And if you played any part in keeping my children from me, Camille... God help you."

Without waiting for her reply, I barked an order to my second-in-command, Dominic, who was standing a few paces back. "Find out where Maya Brooks lives. Find out where she works, who she sees, and what doctor delivered those children. I want a full dossier on her last four years on my desk in two hours."

"Yes, Mr. Vale," Dominic bowed his head instantly.

Camille stood on the cold stone path, her perfect face contorted in anger. "You're making a massive mistake, Adrian! You think she's innocent? Ask your grandfather why she really left!"

I turned my back on my fiancée and walked toward my car. The hunt for the truth—and for my family—had just begun.
