Chapter 5 - The Rehearsal TrapThe Grand Ballroom at the Drake Hotel was a glittering spectacle of Chicago’s highest society. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ornate ceilings, string quartets played classical melodies, and the city's elite—politicians, CEOs, judges, and high-ranking mob bosses—mingled with glasses of champagne in hand.

I stood at the center of the room in a tailored tux, playing the charming groom. Lorenzo sat near the head table, sipping his scotch, looking at me with a proud, smug expression. He believed he had broken my spirit, just as he had broken my father’s years ago.
Arthur Hart stood next to him, laughing loudly at a joke while Camille paraded around the room, flaunting her massive diamond engagement ring to every photographer in sight.
"Everything is in place," Dominic whispered, slipping up behind me with a glass of champagne.
"Did you get the wiretap recordings?" I asked under my breath, maintaining a faint smile for the flashing cameras across the room.
"Yes," Dominic replied quietly. "We intercepted a call between Senator Hart and your grandfather from two hours ago. Hart confirmed that four years ago, he used his federal connections to alter Maya’s bank records and frame her for embezzlement. He also admitted on tape to accepting twenty million dollars in bribes from Vale Syndicate front companies."
"Good," I murmured. "What about Maya?"
"She's safe. My men have moved her and the triplets to a secure safehouse outside the city. She didn't want to go at first, but when I showed her the threat assessment, she agreed."
"Thank you, Dominic."
"Adrian," Lorenzo’s booming voice called out as he tapped his glass with a silver spoon, gathering the attention of the entire room. The music stopped, and the crowd turned toward the front of the ballroom.
"Friends, esteemed guests," Lorenzo announced, standing up slowly with his cane. "Tonight, we celebrate the union of two great Chicago families. The Vale name and the Hart name will join together to lead this city into a new era of prosperity."
The room burst into polite applause. Camille beamed, walking over to stand beside me, wrapping her arm tightly around mine.
"My grandson, Adrian," Lorenzo continued, looking at me with cold, possessive eyes, "has proven himself to be a true Vale. He understands that duty, loyalty, and family ambition come before short-lived, trivial emotions. To Adrian and Camille!"
"To Adrian and Camille!" the crowd echoed, raising their glasses.
"Thank you, Grandfather," I said, stepping forward toward the microphone set up near the podium. Camille smiled brilliantly, expecting me to deliver a romantic speech dedicated to her.
"I’d like to say a few words," I said, looking out at the sea of powerful faces. "My grandfather is right about one thing. Tonight is about family. It’s about truth. And it’s about answering for the choices we’ve made."
Lorenzo’s smile faltered slightly. Arthur Hart frowned.
"Four years ago," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing clearly through the speaker system, "I was made to believe that the woman I loved had betrayed me. I was given forged financial documents, fake wire transfers, and threatening reports."
Murmurs rippled through the high-society crowd. Camille’s face drained of color. "Adrian, what are you doing?" she hissed under her breath, reaching for my arm.
I pulled away from her, keeping my eyes fixed on my grandfather.
"I found out yesterday that those documents were forged by Senator Arthur Hart," I continued loudly. "And ordered by my grandfather, Lorenzo Vale."
Gasps filled the room. Photographers began flashing their cameras frantically.
"Adrian, sit down!" Lorenzo roared, slamming his cane against the floor, his face flushed with rage. "Security, turn off his microphone!"
"Don't bother," Dominic’s voice boomed over the speakers as he clicked a remote control in his hand.
The giant projector screens behind the head table, usually reserved for displaying wedding slides, flickered to life. Instead of romantic photos, financial documents, bank wire receipts, and recorded audio files began playing automatically for every news outlet and billionaire in the room to see.
Senator Hart’s voice blasted through the ballroom speakers: "...The Brooks girl is gone, Lorenzo. My office wiped her records and framed her with the Moretti accounts. Adrian will never know she was pregnant. Just make sure the Hart-Vale merger goes through next month..."
The ballroom exploded into chaos.
Reporters shoved past security, aiming their cameras at Senator Hart, who stood frozen in horror. Camille screamed, clutching her head in disbelief as her pristine reputation crumbled before her eyes.
"You ruined us!" Camille shrieked, lunging at me, her face contorted in manic fury. "You ruined everything!"
I looked down at her with pure indifference. "You ruined yourself the moment you targeted an innocent woman and three defenseless children."
I turned to my grandfather, who was trembling with a mix of fury and heart-stopping shock.

"The FBI has already been given copies of those files, Grandfather," I said calmly, taking off my groom's boutonnieres and dropping it onto his table. "Your empire is over. And so is your hold on me."
Without waiting for the police sirens that were already echoing in the streets outside, I turned my back on the collapsing dynasty and walked out of the Drake Hotel.
