CHAPTER 7 — The Trap at Fort Mason

CHAPTER 7 — The Trap at Fort Mason

Daniel didn't sleep.

He spent the entire night reading every page of Operation Homecoming.

The pattern was undeniable.

Thirty-one deployed soldiers.

Thirty-one families destroyed while they were overseas.

Every case followed the same script.

A forged loan.

Mounting debt.

Foreclosure.

Disappearance of evidence.

Then silence.

Some soldiers had taken their own lives after returning home.

Others had disappeared.

Officially, every case had been labeled a personal tragedy.

Unofficially...

Someone had built a fortune from the sacrifices of America's servicemen.

Marcus looked up from his laptop.

"I finally found Sarah Whitmore."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Where is she?"

Marcus hesitated.

"In protective custody."

"Alive?"

"Barely."

Hours later, Daniel entered a secure federal building.

Sarah sat behind reinforced glass.

Her arm was in a sling, and stitches ran across her forehead.

The moment she saw Daniel, tears filled her eyes.

"I tried to protect Emily."

Daniel's voice caught.

"She's alive, isn't she?"

Sarah nodded.

"For now."

Daniel closed his eyes in relief.

Sarah slid a flash drive across the table.

"This is why they're hunting everyone."

Marcus inserted it into a secure computer.

Hundreds of hidden recordings appeared.

Secret bank meetings.

Judges accepting cash.

Loan officers forging military documents.

Property auctions rigged before they even began.

Then...

One final video.

Colonel Richard Mercer stood inside a conference room.

Around him sat investors in expensive suits.

He raised a glass.

"Gentlemen..."

"Our newest military deployment begins Monday."

A map appeared behind him.

Texas.

Arizona.

North Carolina.

Military towns.

Mercer smiled.

"By Christmas..."

"...we'll own another two hundred homes."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel's fists trembled.

This wasn't revenge.

It wasn't greed.

It was an industry.

Marcus immediately contacted the FBI's Public Corruption Task Force.

Within hours...

Federal agents began quietly building a case.

But one senior agent shook his head.

"We can't arrest Mercer yet."

Daniel stared.

"You just watched him confess."

"We need the financial records."

"The original ledgers."

"Without those..."

"The defense will claim the videos were manipulated."

Daniel felt frustration boil over.

"So where are they?"

Sarah answered.

"I know."

Everyone turned toward her.

"Mercer never trusted computers."

"He keeps the original accounting books inside his ranch outside Fort Mason."

Marcus frowned.

"The place is heavily guarded."

Sarah nodded.

"So is the truth."

That night...

Daniel made a decision.

"I'll go."

Marcus immediately objected.

"No."

Daniel looked him in the eye.

"They destroyed dozens of military families."

"They almost destroyed mine."

"I'm ending this."

Fort Mason Ranch looked abandoned.

But Daniel recognized the signs immediately.

Hidden cameras.

Fresh tire tracks.

Motion sensors.

Professional security.

He slipped through a dry creek bed under cover of darkness.

Rex, despite his age, remained beside him.

Halfway across the property...

Rex suddenly stopped.

Growled.

Then lunged.

A hidden guard emerged from camouflage only seconds before Daniel saw him.

Within moments, Daniel quietly restrained the man without raising an alarm.

Rex had just saved his life.

Again.

Inside the ranch house...

Daniel found exactly what Sarah described.

An underground vault.

Shelves filled with handwritten ledgers dating back almost fifteen years.

Names.

Addresses.

Amounts stolen.

Government officials paid.

Judges bribed.

Every crime carefully recorded.

Daniel photographed everything.

Then the vault door slammed shut.

Lights flickered on.

A familiar voice echoed through the room.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Colonel Richard Mercer stepped into view.

Wearing civilian clothes.

Holding a pistol.

Smiling.

"You were always my best soldier, Captain."

Daniel slowly stood.

"You destroyed military families."

Mercer shrugged.

"I found opportunity."

"You call that opportunity?"

"I call it business."

Mercer smiled coldly.

"They volunteered to serve."

"I simply invested while they were away."

Daniel's anger finally broke.

"You used their loyalty against them."

Mercer's smile disappeared.

"They chose duty."

"I chose profit."

He raised the pistol.

"You should've stayed overseas."

Just then—

The ranch windows exploded.

"FBI!"

"Federal agents!"

"Drop your weapon!"

Marcus had come anyway.

Mercer fired once.

Chaos erupted.

Daniel tackled him to the floor as agents stormed the room.

The pistol slid across the concrete.

Mercer tried to run.

Rex, limping heavily despite his age, launched himself forward and clamped onto Mercer's arm.

The colonel screamed.

May you like

Federal agents surrounded him.

It was over.
