CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Fought Back

The first punch came fast.

Daniel ducked instinctively.

Years of military training took over before he had time to think.

The attacker's momentum carried him into a steel shelf.

Boxes crashed everywhere.

The second man lunged.

Daniel grabbed his wrist, twisted sharply, and sent him sprawling across the concrete.

The third pulled out a knife.

Daniel backed away.

He wasn't looking for a fight.

He only needed enough time.

Enough time...

to reach his truck.

The knife flashed.

Daniel grabbed a loose metal pipe from the floor.

The blade scraped against it with a shower of sparks.

Then—

Police sirens.

The attackers exchanged nervous glances.

One shouted,

"Forget him!"

Within seconds they disappeared into a waiting black SUV.

The tires screamed as it sped away.

The police arrived moments later.

An officer approached Daniel.

"You okay?"

"I'm fine."

"What happened?"

Daniel looked toward the road.

"I think I just uncovered a criminal organization."

The officer raised an eyebrow.

Daniel handed him Emily's notebook.

The officer flipped through a few pages.

His expression changed immediately.

"Captain..."

"Where did you get this?"

"Storage Unit 217."

The officer suddenly closed the notebook.

"You need to come with us."

Something about his voice felt wrong.

Too calm.

Too rehearsed.

Daniel's instincts screamed.

Then he noticed it.

The officer subtly slipped a text message onto his phone.

Only one sentence appeared before the screen locked.

Victor knows you found the evidence. Don't trust everyone wearing a badge.

Daniel looked up.

The officer never met his eyes.

Instead, he quietly whispered,

"Take your children."

"Leave tonight."

Before Daniel could respond, another police cruiser pulled into the lot.

The officer immediately stepped back, pretending nothing had happened.

Daniel drove home using side streets.

Every mirror.

Every intersection.

Every parked car.

He checked them all.

Someone was following him.

Not closely.

Professionally.

When he pulled into his driveway, Rex was barking furiously before Daniel even opened the truck door.

Lily ran outside.

"Dad!"

"What happened?"

"There was a woman here."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"What woman?"

"She asked where you were."

"What did she look like?"

Lily handed him a business card the woman had left behind.

It read:

Sarah Whitmore

Investigative Reporter

On the back, written in hurried handwriting, were seven words:

Your wife didn't abandon you. She disappeared.

Daniel stared at the message.

Before he could react, his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A terrified female voice whispered,

"Captain Brooks..."

"This is Sarah."

"I only have a few seconds."

"They know I'm helping you."

"You need to leave your house immediately."

"They're already inside."

The line went dead.

At that exact moment...

Rex began growling—not at the front door.

May you like

But toward the dark hallway leading to the bedrooms.

Someone was already in the house.
