CHAPTER 3 — The Video She Never Meant Him to See

CHAPTER 3 — The Video She Never Meant Him to See
Daniel's finger hovered over the mouse.
The screen remained black.
Static hissed through the speakers before the image returned.
Emily looked completely different from the woman he'd seen laughing at the bank.
Her makeup was smeared. One side of her face carried a fading bruise. Her eyes darted nervously toward the door every few seconds.
She whispered instead of speaking.
"Daniel... if you're seeing this, it means Lily was brave enough to find what I hid."
Daniel felt his heartbeat slow.
Emily continued.
"I didn't leave because I stopped loving our children."
She broke down crying.
"I left because Victor Hale threatened to kill them."
Daniel froze.
"What...?"
The video skipped for a moment.
Emily wiped her face.
"It started when I borrowed money after Noah got sick."
Daniel's mind raced.
Noah had been hospitalized while he was deployed overseas. Emily had told him insurance covered everything.
She had lied.
"We owed thirty-two thousand dollars."
"I thought it was only a loan."
"But Victor never wanted repayment."
"He wanted this house."
Images flashed across the screen.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Copies of Daniel's military records.
Bank statements.
Victor already had everything.
"He said soldiers are easy targets."
"They're gone for months."
"They trust too much."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Emily continued speaking.
"He forced me to forge your signature."
"I refused."
"He showed me pictures of Lily walking home from school."
Daniel felt cold.
"He knew exactly when Noah took naps."
"He knew Rex was getting old."
Emily covered her mouth to stop herself from sobbing.
"I thought if I cooperated... he'd leave the children alone."
Another loud knock echoed somewhere behind the camera.
Emily jumped.
"If anything happens to me..."
"Don't trust anyone from Hale Property."
"They have people inside the bank..."
"...inside the courthouse..."
"...and even inside—"
The recording suddenly cut.
A loud crash.
Emily screamed.
The camera fell sideways.
Heavy footsteps filled the room.
Then the same man's voice.
"I told you there would never be a recording."
The screen went black forever.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stared at the frozen monitor for nearly five minutes.
Lily quietly stood beside him.
"Was Mom... telling the truth?"
Daniel couldn't answer.
Instead, he hugged her tighter than he ever had.
"For now..."
"We're going to protect each other."
That night he searched the laundry room.
Under an old washing machine sat one loose floorboard.
Inside...
Emily had hidden far more than the flash drive.
A small notebook.
A stack of receipts.
Five prepaid cell phones.
And one key.
Attached to it was a faded label.
Storage Unit 217.
The next morning Daniel drove across town.
The storage facility manager frowned.
"This unit hasn't been opened in almost a year."
Daniel unlocked it.
The metal door rattled upward.
Dust floated through the air.
Then he stopped.
Inside wasn't furniture.
It wasn't clothes.
It was evidence.
Boxes labeled with names.
Financial records.
Hard drives.
Dozens of property deeds.
Photographs of elderly homeowners.
Military families.
Widows.
Single parents.
Every file ended the same way.
Foreclosed.
Daniel slowly realized the truth.
Victor Hale wasn't stealing houses.
He was hunting vulnerable families.
His own family had simply become the next target.
As Daniel photographed everything with his phone...
He heard footsteps outside.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Someone stopped directly behind the storage door.
A shadow stretched across the concrete floor.
Then a voice.
"You really shouldn't have opened that."
Daniel turned.
Three men stood outside.
None of them smiled.
The largest cracked his knuckles.
"We're here for the key."
Daniel quietly slipped the notebook into his backpack.
"You'll have to take it."
May you like
The man grinned.
"That was the plan."
