Chapter 5 - Justice in the Light
The trial of The State of Texas v. Carmen and Javier Robles became the most talked-about legal battle in Dallas history.
With Alexander’s immense resources backing the prosecution, the defense stood no chance. The hotel hallway security footage clearly showed Javier standing guard outside the honeymoon suite while muffled screams echoed from within. It showed Carmen and her six accomplices walking out forty minutes later, adjusting their designer jewelry.
Sofia sat at the witness stand, her head held high. The swelling on her face had healed, leaving her looking radiant, but her eyes held the unbreakable strength of a survivor. She recounted every single blow, every insult, and the absolute betrayal of her husband's compliance.
When the verdict was read, the courtroom was dead silent.
Carmen Robles and her six accomplices were found guilty of felony aggravated assault, conspiracy, and extortion. Carmen was sentenced to fifteen years in a maximum-security state prison without the possibility of parole.
Javier Robles was stripped of his law license permanently and sentenced to eight years for his role as an accessory and co-conspirator. As he was led away in handcuffs, weeping and begging for leniency, he looked toward the gallery. But Sofia didn't look back. She was holding my hand on her left, and Alexander’s hand on her right.

Outside the courthouse, a sea of reporters and flashing cameras surrounded us. Alexander stepped in front of the microphones, his arm wrapped tightly around Sofia’s shoulders.
"My daughter’s name is Sofia Whitmore," Alexander announced to the cameras, his voice echoing off the marble steps. "She belongs to a family that protects its own. Let this be a lesson to anyone who mistakes kindness for weakness. We will always answer the call."
