Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

Alexander didn't look at me. He didn't ask how I was, nor did he mention the bitter silence that had stretched between us for a decade. His entire universe had shrunk to the broken girl sobbing into the cushions of my sofa. He reached out, his massive, trembling hand hovering over Sofia's bruised shoulder, terrified that touching her might cause her more pain.
"Who did this, Sofia?" Alexander’s voice wasn't loud. It was a low, guttural vibration that made the glass coffee table hum.
"Javier... and his mother, Carmen," Sofia whispered, her voice raw. "They wanted the Uptown condo, Dad. They said if I didn't sign the transfer deed, I wouldn't leave the hotel room alive."
Alexander slowly stood up. The grogginess from the three-in-the-morning phone call was entirely gone, replaced by a terrifying, lethal clarity. People in Dallas knew Alexander as a retired real estate mogul, but before the money, before the clean suits, Alexander had grown up in the roughest docks of Boston. He knew exactly what kind of monsters hid behind designer clothes.
"Elena," Alexander said, turning his cold, gray eyes to me for the first time. "Pack a bag for her. We are leaving right now."
"Dad, no!" Sofia panicked, wincing as she tried to sit up. "Carmen said she has people watching this building! She said if I go to the police, she’ll destroy us!"
"We aren't going to the police, baby girl," Alexander said, his jaw locking so tight the muscles in his neck strained. "The police operate within the law. The Robles family just decided they don't want to live under the law anymore. I'm taking you to my estate. It has 24-hour private security."

As I helped Sofia into a pair of sweatpants, cutting away the blood-soaked tulle of her ruined wedding dress, my heart hammered against my ribs. I had spent years fearing Alexander’s intensity, but tonight, that intensity was the only shield protecting our daughter.
We slipped out through the basement service elevator of my building, guided by two large, silent men in dark suits who had arrived with Alexander. As his armored SUV tore through the quiet, rain-slicked streets of Dallas, I looked out the window, knowing that by sunrise, the Robles family would realize their prey had escaped. And a war would begin.
