Chapter 6 - Flying High

As David led me onto the dance floor, his hand resting gently and securely against my waist, I looked out through the massive glass windows of the ballroom. In the distance, the lights of planes could be seen taking off from DFW Airport, soaring high into the clear, starry night sky.

A year ago, I was standing under a glass walkway at Terminal C, watching my entire world shatter in a single heartbeat. I had thought that the betrayal would define me forever. But looking back, that moment wasn't the end of my life—it was the resurrection of it.

"You look incredibly peaceful tonight, Megan," David murmured softly as he spun me gracefully through the crowd.

"I am," I smiled, leaning slightly into his warmth, feeling completely safe, completely seen, and completely appreciated for exactly who I was. "I finally figured out the equation."

"What equation?" he asked, his eyes crinkling with amusement.

"The equation of value," I whispered, looking around the room filled with people who respected me, a company that thrived under me, and a man who truly valued my heart. "You can spend years fixing the cracks in someone else's life, but the most important investment you will ever make is the one you make in yourself."

Outside, another plane roared into the night sky, moving forward steadily against the wind—perfectly calm, perfectly balanced, and completely free. I was no longer Megan Walker, the invisible wife left behind at the terminal. I was Megan Sterling. And I was finally flying first class.
