Chapter 3 - The Eviction of the Entitled

The airport terminal, once a symbol of their exciting escape, had become a prison of public humiliation. Around them, other travelers began to stop, whispering and pointing as the reality of the situation set in.

"Megan, please!" Jack begged, dropping his suitcase, his eyes wide with terror as he realized the sheer scale of the empire his wife actually controlled. "We can talk about this! Vanessa means nothing to me, she’s just a colleague! I love you!"

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She turned and slapped Jack across the face. "A colleague?! You told me you were divorcing her today! You told me this was our celebratory trip!" Vanessa grabbed her own luggage and marched away into the crowd, leaving Jack standing alone, utterly ruined.

"Sir," an airline gate agent walked over, looking at her computer screen with a frown. "Mr. Jack Vance? Your party’s boarding passes have been flagged as fraudulent due to a corporate account cancellation. I’m going to have to ask you to step out of the queue."

Carol looked as though she was about to faint. "Megan, you can't do this to us! Where are we supposed to go?! The children are here!"

Megan looked at the children—Jack's niece and nephew, whom she had loved like her own. She kneeled down to their eye level, her expression softening for a brief second. "Your mother and grandmother lied to you, sweeties. But don't worry. A car is waiting outside to take you safely back to your mother's apartment. But as for your uncle Jack..." Megan stood back up, her eyes turning into shards of glass as she looked at her husband. "...he’s going to be very busy with the police."

"The police?!" Jack gasped. "For what?!"

"For the $400,000 you funneled from the clinic’s charity fund into a private offshore account over the last eighteen months, Jack," Gerald answered for her, tapping his tablet. "The FBI financial crimes division has just received the sealed file. They are waiting for you at the baggage claim."
