Chapter 4 - The Legal Scorched-Earth

Over the next three months, the Vance family experienced what it meant to face the full, unmitigated wrath of a Sterling.

Alexander and Gerald didn't just file for divorce; they executed a scorched-earth strategy. Because Megan had kept her assets entirely separate under her family trust prior to the marriage, Jack had no legal claim to a single dime of her wealth. Furthermore, the forensic audit Megan had authorized revealed a decade of financial manipulation by Jack and his mother.

I sat in the high-rise offices of Sterling Holdings, watching the rain pour over the Dallas skyline. Chloe, my closest childhood friend and a brilliant corporate attorney, walked in with a bottle of champagne.

"It’s official, Megan," Chloe smiled, pouring two glasses. "The judge signed the final decree this morning. Jack signed over his remaining shares of the clinic to cover a fraction of his debts to you. His medical license has been permanently revoked by the board."

"And the criminal charges?" I asked, sipping the crisp liquid, feeling the last weights of a ten-year nightmare lifting off my shoulders.

"He accepted a plea deal," Chloe replied. "Five years of probation, full restitution, and three hundred hours of community service. He’s currently working as a medical supply delivery driver just to pay his rent. Carol had to downsize to a studio apartment in the suburbs, and Ashley’s husband filed for divorce after finding out she helped Jack cover up his affair."

They had thought my patience was weakness. They had thought my silence meant I would allow myself to be erased. But they had forgotten that a woman who knows how to build a life also knows exactly how to dismantle one.
