Chapter 1 - The Master’s Return

The word echoed down the polished marble corridor with the cold, absolute weight of an executioner's blade: "Marcus."

Through the encrypted security channel on my phone, Marcus answered instantly on the first ring. His voice was gravelly, precise, and completely devoid of emotion.

"I am on site, Mr. Vance," Marcus reported quietly. "Twelve units are currently deployed around the perimeter. The primary gates, subterranean garage, and staff exits have been secured. No one leaves the estate."

"Good," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying a lethal edge that made my sister Sienna stumble back two paces. "Initiate lockdown sequence B. Shut down the primary electrical grid in the grand ballroom. Activate the backup emergency lighting. And bring the private security detail directly to the main foyer."

"Understood, sir. Executing now."

Sienna’s face drained of every last drop of color. Her manicured hands trembled as she reached toward my arm. "Julian, please! What are you doing?! It’s your family in there! Aunt Evelyn, Uncle Richard, all your cousins... they came here to celebrate your recent overseas acquisition! We did this for you!"

I didn't even look at her. I shifted my hold on Clara, tucking my wife closer against my chest. Her skin was burning, her pulse racing frantically against my neck. Her small hands were raw, red, and cracked from hours of exposure to harsh industrial cleaning chemicals.

"Julian..." Clara whimpered softly, her eyes unfocused as she buried her face into the lapel of my soaked tailored suit. "The... the silver platters... Aunt Evelyn said if I didn't polish them before eight... she would tell you I was a failure..."

A white-hot surge of pure rage roared through my veins, but I forced my expression to remain dead granite.

"Nobody is touching you ever again, Clara," I whispered into her hair, kissing her forehead. "You are the mistress of this house. And tonight, every single leech who made you bleed will pay for every drop of water that touched your hands."

At that exact second, the grand chandelier in the main hall went pitch black.

A collective shriek of confusion and panic erupted from the grand ballroom down the hall. Music cut out mid-note, replaced by the sudden, low hum of red emergency wall sconces flicking on.

Heavy, synchronized footsteps echoed across the marble floor as Marcus—wearing a charcoal tactical suit—marched into the corridor followed by eight heavily armed estate guards.

"Mr. Vance," Marcus bowed his head slightly. "The perimeter is locked. The cellular signal dampeners have been activated. No calls can be placed outside the estate grounds."

"Take Clara to the master suite on the third floor," I ordered Marcus, gently transferring my wife into the arms of our trusted head nurse, who had rushed down the rear elevator behind Marcus. "Have Dr. Chen examine her hands immediately. Administer intravenous fluids and place two guards outside her door. No one enters except me."

"Julian, no! Don't leave me!" Clara gasped weakly, her small fingers clutching at my sleeve.

I leaned down and kissed her lips gently, my tone softening for a fraction of a second. "I'm not leaving you, my love. I'm just going to clean the house."
