Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Sterling Industries

The digital clock on the desk read 2:14 AM.

Julian didn't call his corporate attorney yet. Instead, he opened a secure, encrypted terminal and pulled up a private corporate intelligence database. He typed in three words: Arthur Sterling, Vanessa Sterling.

The files downloaded in seconds.

Arthur Sterling had been the CEO of Sterling Logistics, a multi-million-dollar shipping competitor that Julian’s corporation had legally and aggressively dismantled during a hostile market takeover six years ago. Broken, humiliated, and facing federal indictments for financial fraud, Arthur Sterling had suffered a massive stroke and died in a public hospital, leaving behind a twenty-one-year-old daughter—Vanessa Sterling.

According to the dossier, Vanessa had vanished from public records shortly after her father’s death. She had legally changed her surname, undergone elite social etiquette training, and meticulously planned her infiltration of Julian’s life, targeting his weakest points: his grief over his late wife, his desire for a maternal figure for Lily, and his blind trust in her polished facade.

She hadn't just wanted to marry him for his money. She had intended to drive him insane, institutionalize Lily under the guise of "childhood trauma," and inherit his entire four-hundred-million-dollar estate by framing him for negligence.

And she had almost pulled it off.

Julian’s hands gripped the edges of the mahogany desk so hard the wood groaned under his pressure. Every ounce of grief he had felt vanished, replaced by an absolute, freezing vortex of cold, calculating fury.

He picked up his secure satellite phone and dialed a direct, encrypted number.

“Vance,” a deep, gravelly voice answered on the other end after a single ring.

“Marcus, it’s Julian Rivers,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made even seasoned private investigators take notice. “I need your surveillance team on the move right now.”

“Name the target, boss,” Marcus replied instantly.

“Vanessa Sterling. She just left my estate ten minutes ago in a silver Mercedes sedan, heading south on Highway 75 toward downtown Dallas. Track her phone, track her vehicle, and intercept her before she crosses the county line.”

“What do you want us to do with her when we have her?”

“Don’t touch her,” Julian said quietly. “Just guide her straight into the trap I’m about to set. By sunrise, Arthur Sterling’s daughter is going to learn what happens when you wake a sleeping giant.”
