Chapter 2 - The Erased Months

Midnight had long since passed, but the study on the second floor remained bathed in the harsh, white glare of the desk lamp. Lily was finally asleep in the guest bedroom down the hall, exhausted from hours of crying, her old brown teddy bear clutched tightly in her arms.

Julian sat behind his mahogany desk, his fingers flying across the keyboard of his security console.

As the owner of a high-end logistics and security firm, Julian’s mansion was protected by a state-of-the-art closed-circuit camera and server array. Every hallway, every room, every corner of the property was monitored 24/7.

He pulled up the administrative login to check the footage from the last three months, wanting to see the full extent of what Vanessa had subjected Lily to while he was away on business trips.

He clicked on the camera directory for the west wing—Lily’s nursery and playroom.

Error: No data available for dates prior to yesterday.

Julian frowned, his brow furrowing as he typed in his master root password to access the system logs. He navigated to the storage partition.

The storage utilization graph showed a massive drop three months ago. Someone hadn't just deleted a few clips; they had executed a complete, deep-level format wipe of the camera partitions covering Lily’s entire wing of the house.

Julian’s blood ran cold.

Not one day. Not one week. Months of footage.

Someone with master administrator credentials had systematically erased every single record of what had happened inside Lily’s living space since the day Vanessa moved into the mansion. The only person in the house with master credentials—other than Julian himself—was Vanessa. She had spent months torturing a six-year-old child while casually deleting the evidence, knowing that if Julian ever checked, he would find only blank screens.

Before Julian could process the terrifying depth of Vanessa’s premeditation, a soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door of the study.

The door creaked open, and Mrs. Gable stepped inside. She looked older, her face lined with exhaustion and deep sorrow, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched a small, worn object wrapped in a velvet cloth.

“Mr. Rivers,” Mrs. Gable whispered, glancing down the dark hallway to make sure Vanessa was gone. “I know you told me to lock up and let her leave, but... before she packed her bags and stormed out to her car ten minutes ago, she tried to sneak into Lily’s room while the child was sleeping.”

Julian stood up so fast his chair slammed backward against the wall. “What? Why?”

“She wasn't trying to say goodbye,” Mrs. Gable said grimly, stepping closer to the desk and laying the velvet cloth down. She unfolded it, revealing a small, tarnished silver key and a heavy, old-fashioned brass micro-SD card holder, alongside a tiny, water-damaged microchip. “She was trying to rip this out of Lily’s teddy bear. I caught her standing over the bed with a pair of sewing scissors. When I yelled at her, she dropped this and ran.”

Julian stared down at the items on the desk. He picked up the tiny microchip.

“What is this?” Julian asked, his voice tightening.

“I don’t know, sir,” Mrs. Gable said softly. “But before your late wife, Elena, passed away... she told me something strange. She said if anything ever happened to her, to watch over Lily’s bear. She said Elena hid something inside it—something that proved Vanessa wasn’t who she pretended to be.”

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. He slid the microchip into a USB adapter reader and plugged it directly into his secure workstation.

A single file appeared on the monitor screen: a digital audio recording dated two and a half years ago, recorded just three days before Elena’s fatal car accident.

Julian clicked play.

The computer speakers hissed with static, and then Elena’s voice—clear, terrified, and desperate—filled the quiet study.

“Julian, if you’re hearing this, it means I didn’t make it. You think Vanessa is your sweet corporate assistant, but she’s not. She’s the daughter of Arthur Sterling—the man whose company you bankrupted five years ago. She changed her name, she engineered our meeting, and she’s been poisoning my tea for weeks. She wants everything you own... and she wants my little girl out of the way. Please... protect Lily...”

The recording cut out with a sharp click.

The study went dead silent. Julian stood frozen, the blood roaring in his ears.

Vanessa wasn't just a cruel fiancée. She was the daughter of his bitterest enemy, sent into his life on a calculated, multi-year mission of vengeance and theft. And she had nearly succeeded in destroying the last piece of Elena he had left in this world.
