Chapter 4 - The Paper Necklace

A collective murmur of pity and disgust rippled through the high-society crowd.

"An assistant?" Helena scoffed, looking at me with absolute contempt. "Security! Why is this charity case allowed on the executive floor? Have her removed immediately before she ruins the press photos."

Sophia flinched, hiding behind my leg, her small voice trembling. "Daddy...? I made you a necklace. Look, it has hearts on it."

Dominic looked at the paper necklace, and for a fraction of a second, a flash of genuine guilt crossed his face. But then he looked at Helena, he looked at her billionaire father standing nearby, and he made the final, fatal choice of his life.

"Take that garbage home, Sophia," Dominic snapped, his voice cold and hard as iron. "Vivienne, stop using our daughter to create drama. Get out of my building right now before I have the police arrest you for harassment. You are ruining my life."

"Your life was already ruined the moment you stepped into this lobby, Dominic," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

I took the paper necklace from Sophia’s hand, walked straight past the stunned investors, and laid it gently on the pristine white linen of the main display table, right next to the multi-million-dollar merger contract he was preparing to sign.

"Four years ago, you swore to me that the only thing that mattered to you was our family," I said, looking directly into his hollow, dark eyes. "You told me you were working late nights to build a future for Sophia. But you weren't working late, were you? You were building a pipeline to funnel my family's investment capital into Helena's father’s offshore developments."

Dominic let out a harsh, defensive laugh, though sweat was pouring down his temples. "Your family's capital? Vivienne, your father was a high school teacher! You don't have a dime to your name! Stop lying to these people!"

"Her father was Arthur Sterling, you pathetic thief," Arthur Pendelton’s voice boomed as he stepped out of the elevator, flanked by two federal marshals who had just arrived on the floor.

The name Sterling hit the ballroom like a physical shockwave. Helena’s father, the billionaire tycoon, visibly gasped, his champagne flute slipping from his fingers and shattering against the floor.

"Sterling...?" Helena’s father whispered, his face turning an ash-gray color. He looked from Arthur to me, his hands shaking. "The Sterling Holdings? The ones who control the federal banking charters?"

"The very same, Mr. Beaumont," Arthur smiled coldly, opening his silver briefcase and pulling out a legally sealed cease-and-desist order. "And as of exactly three minutes ago, Sterling Group has executed a total asset recall on Vance Industries. Every loan, every line of credit, and every commercial lease this building occupies has been defaulted."

Dominic's phone began to explode with alerts. The lights in the ballroom suddenly flickered, the massive digital display screen behind the stage cutting from the Vance logo to a stark, black screen with a single, pulsing message: ASSETS SEIZED BY FEDERAL ORDER.
