Chapter 2 - The Red Carpet Ripple

The phone clicked shut in my hand.

Chloe’s smirk remained plastered on her face, but a microscopic flicker of unease finally crossed her eyes. She scoffed, shaking her head as she adjusted the diamond-encrusted corporate badge pinned to her designer blazer.

"Very dramatic, Vivienne," Chloe sneered, her voice carrying across the marble lobby, ensuring the hovering socialites heard every word. "Who was that? Your therapist? Honestly, pretending to be some mysterious powerhouse won't change the fact that Dominic has outgrown you. Look at yourself. You look like you belong at a PTA meeting, not a multi-million-dollar corporate gala."

I didn't answer her. I didn't need to.

I knelt back down, gently removing my hands from Sophia’s ears. She looked up at me, her big, innocent eyes shining with unshed tears. "Mommy, is Daddy upstairs with another family? Did he forget about my necklace?"

"Daddy didn't forget, sweetheart," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, my heart breaking for the illusion she was about to lose, but hardening for the justice she was about to gain. "Daddy is just about to learn a very expensive lesson. Hold onto your necklace. We’re going upstairs."

"Excuse me?" Chloe stepped in front of the velvet rope, her polished facade completely dropping into raw hostility. "I just told you, you aren't on the list. If you take one step toward those glass elevators, I will have the guards throw you into the street."

"I don't need to be on the list, Chloe," I said, my voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register that belonged to the Sterling bloodline. "Because I own the ink it's written with."

Right on cue, the heavy revolving doors of the building burst open.

Three men dressed in dark, sharp tactical suits marched into the lobby, completely ignoring the registration desk. At the front was Arthur Pendelton—the chief legal counsel for Sterling Holdings, a man whose hourly rate could fund Chloe’s salary for a decade. He was flanked by two forensic auditors carrying heavy, aluminum briefcases.

Chloe’s jaw dropped as Arthur bypassed the VIP line, walked straight up to me, and bowed his head in absolute reverence.

"Director Sterling," Arthur said, his voice echoing through the stunned lobby. "Your third brother has initiated Operation: Ledger Cleanse. The commercial bank accounts for Vance Industries have been frozen under suspicion of capital embezzling. The security override has been authorized. We are ready to escort you to the penthouse suite."

The silence in the lobby was absolute.

Chloe took a step back, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her digital tablet, the glass shattering against the marble floor. "Director... Sterling? No... that’s impossible. She’s Vivienne Vance. Her credit card declined at the grocery store last week!"

"It declined because her automated security system flags unauthorized corporate monitoring, Miss Vance," Arthur said, turning a chilling, pitying gaze upon the secretary. "You’ve been tracking the wrong bank accounts. And as of sixty seconds ago, your employment contract with this firm has been permanently voided by the primary shareholder."

I didn't look back at her as the security guards parted the velvet rope for me. As I stepped into the private gold elevator, I watched Chloe sink to her knees, frantically dialing Dominic’s number. But it didn't matter.

The countdown had already reached zero.
