Chapter 5 - THE TRIAL OF VALENTINA

Two weeks later.

The grand council chamber of the New York Syndicate Commission was filled to capacity.

Fifty crime bosses, lieutenants, and legal representatives from across the country sat in tiered wooden pews beneath the majestic carved ceilings of the historic building in Manhattan.

In the center of the courtroom stood a raised witness stand surrounded by bulletproof glass.

Sitting inside the glass box, wearing a bright yellow orange prison jumpsuit, was Lady Valentina Vance. Her golden hair was messy, her face pale and gaunt, and heavy iron handcuffs chained her wrists to her waist belt. Without her family’s fortune and army to protect her, she looked small, broken, and terrified.

At the head of the tribunal sat Don Lorenzo Falcone, serving as the chief arbiter of the five families.

Damiano Moretti sat at the prosecutor’s table, dressed in a sharp three-piece Navy suit. Sitting right beside him, holding his hand with quiet dignity, was Sophia, wearing an elegant ivory wool dress and a matching coat that made her look like royalty.

"Lady Valentina Vance," Don Falcone’s deep, old voice resonated through the courtroom speakers. "You stand accused of violating the sacred Five-Family Charter. Specifically: attempting to assassinate Don Damiano Moretti during a peaceful treaty negotiation, planting military-grade explosives on neutral grounds, and attempting to harm an innocent child."

"It's all lies!" Valentina shrieked, pressing her handcuffed hands against the glass. "Damiano set me up! He murdered my father! He destroyed my family’s business because he wanted to marry his fat, low-class maid!"

The crowd in the courtroom murmured, but Don Falcone raised his gavel, slamming it down with a heavy THUD.

"Silence!" Falcone barked. "The commission has reviewed the physical evidence recovered from the Vance estate. We have reviewed the financial transfers from your Swiss bank accounts to the bomb maker in Zurich. The evidence is absolute."

Falcone turned his cold eyes toward Damiano. "Don Moretti, as the surviving head of the injured family, what punishment do you demand for the accused under syndicate law?"

Damiano stood up slowly. He adjusted his cuffs, his silver eyes cold and unreadable as he walked toward the bulletproof glass box.

Valentina cringed backward as he approached, her eyes wide with fear.

"Syndicate law demands blood for treason," Damiano said, his deep voice carrying clearly to every boss in the room. "Under normal circumstances, I would have executed her three weeks ago in my cellar."

The room went dead silent.

"However," Damiano continued, turning his head to look at Sophia, who gave him a soft, encouraging nod. "My future wife believes in justice, not needless slaughter. She has asked me to grant mercy to a broken woman."

Valentina blinked in absolute shock, looking past Damiano at Sophia, unable to comprehend why the woman she had insulted and tried to destroy would spare her life.

"I demand that Lady Valentina Vance be stripped of all Vance family assets, titles, and territorial rights," Damiano declared firmly. "Her family’s docks will be divided among the remaining four families. And she will spend the rest of her natural life in maximum-security federal custody under international treason charges."

Don Falcone nodded approvingly, slamming his gavel down once more.

"So ordered!" Falcone announced. "The Vance family is officially dissolved. Valentina Vance is banished from syndicate territory forever!"

As guards grabbed Valentina’s arms to drag her out of the glass box, she stopped, looking through the glass at Sophia. Tears poured down her face as the harsh reality of her total defeat settled in.

Sophia didn't look at her with triumph or hatred. She looked at her with a gentle, dignified pity—the look of a woman who had won everything through love, while Valentina had lost everything through greed.

Damiano walked back to the table, taking Sophia’s hand in his, raising her fingers to his lips to press a warm kiss against her knuckles.

"You are too good for this world, Sophia," Damiano whispered softly.

"I just want our life to start without blood on our hands, Damiano," Sophia replied gently, wrapping her arms around his waist.

Damiano smiled, pulling her close against his chest as the bosses in the courtroom stood up, bowing their heads in deep respect to the undisputed King and Queen of New York.
