Chapter 3 - THE SAFE HOUSE CONFRONTATION

Three weeks later.

The war between the Moretti syndicate and the Vance family had set the night skyline of New York ablaze.

Port facilities in New Jersey were burning, three of Vance’s major distribution warehouses in Queens had been seized, and the streets were patrolled by armored vehicles. The Vance family, desperate and losing ground daily, had brought in foreign mercenaries from Eastern Europe to turn the tide.

For her safety, Damiano had moved Sophia and Emma to his most secure location: a secluded, cliffside fortress overlooking the foggy waters of the Hudson River.

The fortress was surrounded by twenty-foot concrete walls, motion sensors, and fifty elite guards.

Inside the master bedroom, the air was warm and smelled of cedarwood and lavender.

Sophia stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out at the rain slicking the dark rocks below. She wore a soft white cashmere sweater and leggings, her dark hair tied back in a loose bun.

Emma was fast asleep on the massive king-sized bed, clutching a brand-new, hand-crafted rag doll that Damiano had personally ordered from a master toy maker in Italy to replace the damaged Matilda.

The oak door opened softly.

Damiano walked into the room. He looked exhausted. His dark hair was messy, his jaw was covered in dark stubble, and his shoulder holster held a heavy crimson stain near the leather strap—a surface graze from a sniper rifle earlier that afternoon.

Sophia turned around instantly, her heart aching at the sight of him. "Damiano!"

She rushed across the room, completely forgetting her old boundaries, and threw her arms around his broad chest. She buried her face in his neck, inhaling his scent of rain, gunpowder, and rich leather.

Damiano froze for a second, surprised by the sheer intensity of her embrace, before his large arms wrapped tightly around her broad, lush frame. He lifted her off her feet slightly, burying his face in her dark hair, letting out a long, heavy sigh that sounded like a man finally finding water in a desert.

"You're bleeding," Sophia whispered frantically, pulling back slightly to inspect the reddish stain on his shoulder. "Let me see it. Sit down on the armchair."

"It's just a scratch, Sophia," Damiano murmured, but he let her guide him toward the leather armchair anyway.

Sophia quickly grabbed the medical kit from the bathroom, kneeling between his legs just as she used to do when preparing his clothing, but now her hands worked with frantic, loving care. She unbuttoned his shirt, exposing his broad, muscular chest covered in dark hair and silver combat scars.

As she carefully cleansed the wound with antiseptic, Damiano watched her face. He looked at her long eyelashes, her full lips, and the soft, beautiful curves of her body that seemed built specifically to comfort a broken man like him.

"You shouldn't be doing this," Damiano said softly.

Sophia stopped her hand, looking up into his silver eyes with concern. "Am I hurting you?"

"No," Damiano whispered, reaching out to stroke her soft cheek with his thumb. "I mean you shouldn't be cleaning my wounds. You are my promised bride, Sophia. You are not my servant."

Sophia felt a warm flush spread across her neck and cheeks. "Damiano... when you declared that to the Dons three weeks ago... I thought you were just saying it to protect us. To give yourself an excuse to break the contract with Valentina."

Damiano let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated through his chest.

"Do you really think I would use a woman like you as a mere pawn, Sophia?" Damiano asked, his gaze burning into hers with absolute truth. "For two years, I watched you walk through my halls. I saw how gently you treated the staff. I saw how fierce you were when protecting Emma. I saw a woman who was more noble, more beautiful, and more real than every fake aristocrat in New York."

He grabbed her hand, bringing her palm up to his lips, pressing a slow, deep kiss into her skin.

"I didn't declare you my bride to save face," Damiano murmured against her skin. "I declared it because I have wanted you in my bed and in my life since the day I saw you smile at your daughter in the garden."

Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. "Damiano... I’m just a maid. I don't know how to run an empire. I don't know how to navigate your world."

"You don't need to run an empire, my sweet Sophia," Damiano said, pulling her up onto his lap. His hands rested on her full hips, holding her broad frame securely against his solid chest. "You just need to let me love you. The rest of the world can burn."

Sophia looked down at his handsome, battle-worn face, feeling the intense, overwhelming devotion radiating from him. The fear that had gripped her heart for three weeks melted away, replaced by a deep, undeniable heat.

She leaned down, pressing her lips against his in a deep, passionate kiss.

Damiano let out a dark growl, his arms tightening around her voluptuous waist, deepening the kiss as the rain thundered against the fortress glass outside.

Suddenly, the red emergency alarm on the wall began to flash silently.

BLINK! BLINK! BLINK!

Damiano snapped his eyes open, his romantic focus instantly shifting back to tactical survival. He gently set Sophia down on her feet, drawing his weapon from his holster in a single fluid motion.

"Damiano? What is it?" Sophia whispered in alarm.

"The perimeter wall has been breached," Damiano said grimly, looking at the security monitor on the wall.

The camera feed showed ten armored vehicles crashing through the iron gates of the fortress. Descending from the lead truck was Don Victor Vance himself, accompanied by thirty masked mercenaries carrying heavy automatic rifles and rocket launchers.

"He found us," Damiano muttered, his silver eyes flashing with deadly anticipation. "Marco! Report!"

The comms earpiece in Damiano’s ear crackled with heavy static and gunfire. "Don Damiano! They brought heavy artillery! We are falling back to the inner courtyard! You need to take the secret elevator to the docks immediately!"

Damiano looked at Sophia, then at Emma, who was waking up, rubbing her eyes in confusion.

"No," Damiano said into his earpiece, a ruthless, victorious smile spreading across his face. "We aren't running anymore. Tell the men to funnel them into the grand hall. It’s time to end the Vance family once and for all."
