Chapter 8 - The Falcone Ambush

The news of Gabriel’s engagement to a maid sent shockwaves through the high-society circles of Boston, but it was exactly the opportunity Don Falcone had been waiting for. He viewed Gabriel’s unconventional romance as a sign of weakness—a deviation from the cold, calculating logic of the old mafia code.

Two days before the wedding, Gabriel and Elena traveled to a quiet, secluded greenhouse in the suburbs of Brookline to select the flowers for the ceremony. Gabriel had insisted on minimal security to give Elena a normal, peaceful afternoon away from the armed guards that usually saturated their lives.

It was a fatal mistake.

As they walked through the glass-paneled pavilion, surrounded by the scent of blooming jasmine and white roses, the quiet of the afternoon was shattered by the screech of tires outside.

Three white delivery vans smashed through the wrought-iron gates of the garden, their rear doors bursting open to reveal a dozen heavily armed Falcone hitmen.

"Gabriel!" Elena screamed as the first spray of gunfire shattered the glass roof above them, sending a rain of glittering shards down onto the green leaves.

Gabriel reacted instantly. Years of survival instinct kicked in; he grabbed Elena by the waist, throwing her behind a massive stone planter just as a line of bullets chewed through the wooden display tables where they had been standing seconds prior.

"Stay down! Don't move!" Gabriel ordered, pulling a compact semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster. He peeked over the edge of the planter, his face a mask of cold, lethal focus.

He fired three precise shots, dropping two of the approaching gunmen into the dirt, but the remaining men were spreading out, flanking their position. Gabriel had only two spare magazines, and Marco’s backup detail was at least ten minutes away.

"We have to move to the back exit," Gabriel whispered to Elena, his eyes scanning the crumbling brick wall at the rear of the greenhouse. "When I start firing, you run for that wooden door. Don't look back, Elena. Do you hear me?"

"I'm not leaving you, Gabriel!" she cried, gripping his jacket, her face pale but her eyes filled with a fierce, terrifying bravery.

"You have to," he said, his voice cracking with an emotion he had never allowed himself to feel during a fight. "You're my wife now. Your life is my only priority."

Gabriel stood up, exposing himself to the gunfire, pumping a steady stream of bullets into the center of the pavilion to draw the enemy's attention. "Run, Elena! Run!"

Elena bolted for the rear door, her heart hammering against her ribs. She reached the wooden handle, throwing it open into the brisk autumn air, but a heavy hand suddenly grabbed her by the shoulder, spinning her around.

It was Don Falcone himself, holding a silver revolver, a twisted, victorious smile on his old face.

"You're the little prize, aren't you?" Falcone hissed, pressing the cold barrel of the gun against her temple. "Let's see how much the Moretti king loves his kingdom now."
