Chapter 4 - The Whitaker Retaliation

The fallout from the broken engagement was swift and brutal. Within forty-eight hours, the Whitaker family pulled all their shipping containers from the Moretti docks in East Boston, causing a logistical nightmare that threatened to stall millions of dollars in legitimate trade.

Gabriel sat at his desk, his sleeves rolled up, listening to a furious tirade from his uncle, Anthony Moretti. Anthony was a man of the old school—he believed women were collateral and pride was a luxury a boss could not afford.

"Are you out of your mind, Gabriel?" Anthony roared, slamming his fist on the mahogany desk. "You broke a multi-million-dollar alliance because Camille threw a little tantrum? Women throw things! They get emotional! You don't tank our import lines over a girl who scrubs toilets!"

Gabriel didn't blink. He calmly lit a cigar, blowing a thin stream of gray smoke toward the ceiling. "Camille didn't throw a tantrum, Anthony. She intentionally inflicted a second-degree burn on a member of my staff. If I allow my fiancée to abuse my people without consequence, I look weak. A boss who cannot protect his own household cannot protect his territory."

"The captains are restless," Anthony hissed, leaning in close. "Arthur Whitaker is talking to the Falcone family. He’s offering them the shipping routes we just vacated. If the Falcones get a foothold in East Boston, we’re looking at a turf war we can't afford."

"Let them talk," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that icy, unyielding register. "Arthur Whitaker thinks his money makes him bulletproof. He forgets that I control the labor unions at those docks. If he tries to move his containers to the Falcones, the longshoremen will strike before the first crane touches a ship. He’ll be bankrupt by the end of the month."

Anthony stared at his nephew, searching for any sign of hesitation. Finding none, he let out a harsh breath and straightened his jacket. "You're playing a dangerous game, Gabriel. You're putting a lot of faith in the loyalty of working men."

"Loyalty is earned by protecting people, Anthony. Not by exploiting them," Gabriel said.

After his uncle left, the study felt suffocatingly quiet. Gabriel rubbed his temples, the weight of the empire pressing heavily against his shoulders. He reached for his phone, intending to call Marco for a security update, but a soft knock at the door interrupted him.

It was Elena.

She wasn't in her uniform. She wore a simple knitted sweater and jeans, her bandage peeking out from beneath her sleeve. She carried a small thermal container.

"I know I’m supposed to be on leave," she said timidly, staying near the threshold. "But my grandmother always said that when a man is carrying the weight of the world, he forgets to eat. I made some chicken soup. It’s... it’s an old family recipe."

Gabriel looked at the container, then up at her face. The tension in his jaw softened, a faint, genuine smile breaking through his stern expression. "Come in, Elena. I think that's exactly what I need."
