Chapter 7 - The Shadow's Edge

The victory at Pier 4 cemented Gabriel’s absolute control over the Boston docks, but the underworld was a volatile ecosystem. A cornered animal was always the most dangerous, and Don Falcone was not a man who accepted humiliation lightly.

A week after the strike, Gabriel returned to the estate late into the evening. The house was quiet, the regular staff having retired to their quarters. He walked into the study, expecting it to be empty, but found Elena asleep on the leather sofa, a heavy history book resting open on her chest.

He walked over with a soft smile, leaning down to gently close the book. As he moved it, Elena stirred, her long lashes fluttering open. When she saw him, her face lit up with a warmth that made his chest tighten.

"You're late," she whispered, her voice thick with sleep.

"Underworld administration never stops," Gabriel joked softly, sitting on the edge of the sofa beside her. He reached out, his thumb gently tracing the line of her cheekbone. "You shouldn't have waited up for me."

"I wanted to make sure you came back in one piece," she said, her hand rising to cover his. The bandage was gone now, leaving only a faint, pink line on her forearm—a reminder of the night their lives had collided. "Gabriel... I've been thinking. I need to move out of the estate. I need to get back to my own apartment."

Gabriel’s hand tightened on hers. A sudden, sharp spike of panic hit his chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since he was a child. "Why? Are you unhappy here? Has someone mistreated you?"

"No! No, nothing like that," she said quickly, sitting up. "It’s just... people are talking, Gabriel. The other staff, the captains... they see how you look at me. They see the time we spend together. A man in your position... you're supposed to marry a princess, an heiress. Not a girl from South Boston whose family works the docks. I don't want to be the vulnerability that your enemies use against you."

Gabriel stood up, his face hardening into an expression of absolute determination. He walked to the center of the room, turning back to face her.

"Let them talk, Elena," he said, his voice carrying the full force of his authority. "Camille was a princess, and she tried to burn this house down from the inside. You are the only person in this city who sees the man beneath the title. You aren't my vulnerability. You are my anchor."

He walked back to her, reaching into his pocket to pull out a small, velvet box. He didn't offer her a black titanium ring of convenience, nor a diamond of social obligation. He opened the box to reveal an antique silver ring set with a brilliant, deep red ruby—his mother’s ring, the only piece of jewelry his father had ever given out of true love.

"I took off one ring because it belonged to a lie," Gabriel said, kneeling before her once again. "I want you to wear this one because it belongs to the truth. Elena Brooks, will you stand beside me? Not as a servant, not as a political alliance, but as my wife?"

May you like

Elena stared at the ruby, her breath catching in her throat. Tears of joy spilled down her cheeks as she looked into the eyes of the most feared man in Boston—a man who had redefined his entire empire just to keep her safe.

"Yes, Gabriel," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes."
