Chapter 6 - The Boss's Heart

One year later.
The annual Calder Children's Foundation Gala was once again underway at Calder House.
The grand ballroom was even more magnificent than the year before. Thousands of white and red roses filled the foyer, soft classical music floated through the air, and over fifty million dollars had been raised for children's hospitals across the state.
Elena stood at the top of the grand staircase, wearing an ethereal gown of midnight blue silk. She was no longer a junior event coordinator. She was the executive director of the foundation, respected by every leader in the city, and widely recognized as the brilliant, fierce heart behind Pittsburgh's greatest charitable empire.
"Mrs. Calder?"
Marcus stepped up beside her, wearing a sharp tuxedo and a warm, rare smile. "The board members are requesting your opening remarks in the main hall."
"Thank you, Marcus," Elena smiled. "Where is my husband?"
"He's in the foyer, ma'am," Marcus chuckled gently. "Handling a security breach."
Elena’s brows lifted in amusement. She smoothed down her silk gown and walked gracefully down the grand staircase toward the entrance hall.
Standing in the center of the polished marble foyer was a brand-new, life-size promotional display for the foundation. Printed on the cardboard was a magnificent photograph of Vincent Calder in a black suit, holding hands with Elena and little Sophie in a sunlit garden.
Standing in front of the poster was seven-year-old Sophie, holding the hand of a tiny, three-month-old baby boy wrapped in a soft blue blanket—little Alexander Calder, their newborn son.
And standing right behind them, wearing a tailored tuxedo, was the real Vincent Calder.
Sophie turned to her father, pointing at the printed cardboard face. "Look, Daddy! Alexander wants to kiss the poster too!"
Vincent leaned down, picking up both Sophie and little Alexander in his massive, powerful arms, holding them securely against his chest.
"Absolutely not," Vincent said solemnly, though his dark grey eyes were overflowing with warmth and pride. "Your mother established a strict rule about kissing posters in this house."
"What rule?" Sophie giggled.
Vincent turned his head as Elena walked up to them, her midnight blue dress rustling softly against the marble floor.
He reached out with his free hand, pulling Elena firmly against his side, his lips brushing against her cheek before resting gently against her ear.
May you like
"The rule," Vincent whispered, his deep voice filled with an everlasting, unbreakable love that echoed through the grand halls of his estate, "is that you only kiss the real man."
Elena smiled, standing on her tiptoes to press her lips to his scarred jaw, while their children laughed happily in the warm light of the home they had built together.
