Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Library

By 10:00 p.m., the main gala dinner was a resounding triumph.

The keynote speeches had drawn tears from the audience, the scholarship presentations had received three standing ovations, and the preliminary donation count had already surpassed forty million dollars—a historical record for the foundation.

Elena stood near the balcony doors, watching the guests dance to the smooth jazz of the live orchestra.

She felt a deep, peaceful relief. Sophie was fast asleep upstairs in Mrs. Gable’s quarters, the event was ending, and for the first time in years, Elena felt a quiet sense of security about her future.

"Ms. Brooks?"

Marcus, Vincent's chief security officer, stepped up beside her. His face was entirely devoid of its usual calm professionalism.

"Marcus? Is something wrong?" Elena asked instantly.

"Mr. Calder requests your presence in the private study on the third floor," Marcus said in a low tone. "Immediately."

Elena’s brow furrowed. "The third floor? That's his private residential wing. Is it about the event accounting?"

"Please, Ms. Brooks," Marcus said, gesturing toward the private service elevator. "Follow me."

The tension in Marcus’s posture made Elena's stomach tighten. She followed him into the quiet, wood-paneled elevator. They bypassed the second-floor guest suites and rose directly to the third floor—a part of Calder House no foundation employee had ever seen.

The doors opened into a massive, dimly lit hallway lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, antique oil paintings, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked gardens below.

Marcus stopped outside a set of heavy iron-reinforced oak doors. He knocked twice, then opened them.

"In here, Ms. Brooks."

Elena stepped into the study.

The room was vast, dominated by a large leather sofa, a grand marble fireplace where a low fire crackled, and a massive mahogany desk.

Standing beside the desk was Vincent Calder. His tuxedo jacket was off, draped over a leather chair. His white shirt sleeves were rolled up over his tattooed forearms, and his tie was loosened.

Standing in front of the desk, flanked by two armed security guards, was a middle-aged man in a caterer's uniform. The man was trembling violently, his face dripping with cold sweat.

On the marble coffee table sat a small, dark velvet bag and three sealed glass vials containing a faint, amber liquid.

Elena froze. "Vincent? What's going on?"

Vincent turned to her. The cold, lethal aura surrounding him was thicker than she had ever felt it before. He looked every inch the dangerous crime boss the newspapers claimed he was.

"Elena," Vincent said softly, though his eyes were sharp as ice. "I apologize for pulling you away from your celebration. But we have a minor administrative issue to finalize."

Vincent walked slowly toward the trembling caterer. "This is Thomas. He was hired four days ago through an external agency to assist with the VIP bar service."

Vincent stopped inches from the caterer. "Thomas, tell Ms. Brooks what you were holding when my men found you near the third-floor private residential lounge ten minutes ago."

The man began to sob. "I... I was paid! I didn't know what it was! I swear to God, Mr. Calder, I didn't know!"

"Tell her," Vincent commanded, his voice dropping an octave.

"A... a sedative," Thomas wept. "A heavy pharmaceutical knockout agent. I was paid fifty thousand dollars to introduce it into the beverage service for the third-floor residential suite."

Elena felt the blood drain entirely from her face. The third-floor suite.

Where Sophie was sleeping.

"My daughter..." Elena gasped, her knees turning to water. "Sophie—"

In a flash, Vincent was across the room. Before Elena could collapse, his strong arms caught her, pulling her firmly against his chest. His large hand came up to cup the back of her head, holding her securely against the solid, warm wall of his body.

"Sophie is completely safe," Vincent said, his voice instantly dropping into a fierce, protective whisper directly against her ear. "My personal guards were outside her door the entire evening, Elena. Nobody touched her. Nobody came within fifty feet of her."

Elena buried her face into his shirt, her body shaking with violent, terrified sobs. The thought of anyone putting a drug near her innocent six-year-old child filled her with a dark, suffocating horror.

"Who?" Elena cried out softly against his chest, her hands gripping the fabric of his shirt. "Who would do that to a child?!"

Vincent’s arms tightened around her, holding her so close she could feel the heavy, dangerous rhythm of his heartbeat.

"They weren't targeting Sophie, Elena," Vincent said, his tone turning into pure steel. "They were targeting you. To create a tragedy that would force me to shut down the foundation and ruin the estate's security credibility."

Vincent looked over Elena's head at Marcus. "Who paid him?"

Marcus stepped forward, holding up a encrypted digital tablet. "We traced the clearing transfer, boss. The funds originated from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. Registered six months ago under a holding company owned by Julian Sterling."

A terrible, heavy silence filled the study.

Elena raised her head from Vincent's chest, her eyes wide with shock and fury. "Julian Sterling... he did this because I didn't let him change the seating chart? Because I stood up to him?"

"No," Vincent said gently, his fingers softly wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "He did it because he realized you are the woman I care about. And he thought hurting you would break me."

Elena stared at him, her breath hitching at the word care.

Vincent slowly turned back to Marcus, his expression darkening into a terrifying mask of absolute vengeance.

"Marcus," Vincent ordered smoothly. "Take Thomas to the basement. Hand him over to the federal prosecutor's team along with the financial trail. As for Julian Sterling..."

Vincent reached into his desk drawer, pulling out a sleek black fountain pen and a leather folder.

"Execute the buyout on all Sterling Real Estate mortgages immediately. Seize his port assets by midnight. By sunrise, I want Julian Sterling stripped of every dollar, every property, and every corporate title he holds in this state."

May you like

"Consider it done, boss," Marcus nodded, grabbing the caterer by the arm and dragging him out of the room.

The heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving Elena and Vincent alone in the quiet, firelit study.
