Chapter 4 - The Fortress

The crackle of the fireplace was the only sound in the vast room.
Elena stood near the desk, her body still trembling slightly from the shock. She looked at Vincent—this man who held the power to destroy a billionaire with a single sentence, yet held her with a gentleness that made her chest ache.
"You protected us," Elena whispered, looking up into his dark grey eyes.
"I will always protect you, Elena," Vincent said quietly, stepping closer to her. "From the moment your daughter kissed that ridiculous poster in my foyer, you became my responsibility."
Elena let out a faint, watery laugh. "She really thought a kiss would make you less scary."
"She was right," Vincent murmured, his long fingers reaching out to gently touch the edge of her jaw, his thumb brushing over her lower lip. "Before you walked into my life, Elena, this house was just a fortress made of concrete, money, and blood. I lived here alone, surrounded by men who feared me and enemies who hated me."
His voice softened, filled with a deep, raw vulnerability he had never shown to another human being.
"Then I saw you taking command of my ballroom. I saw a woman who worked eighteen hours a day to build a life for her child, who didn't care about my money or my reputation, who looked at me with clear, honest eyes."
Elena felt her heart hammering against her ribs, not from fear, but from a soaring, breathtaking warmth. "Vincent... I'm just an event coordinator. You're... you're Vincent Calder."
"I am a man who is completely, hopelessly in love with you, Elena Brooks," Vincent said, his voice low, fierce, and absolute.
The words hung in the warm, firelit air.
Elena looked up at him—at the sharp scar on his jaw, the dark tattoos on his arms, and the profound, fierce devotion shining in his eyes. She realized then that she hadn't been afraid of him for a long time. She trusted him with her life. She trusted him with her daughter.
"Vincent," Elena whispered, stepping into his space and reaching up to place her soft palm against his scarred jaw. "You don't look scary to me at all."
Vincent closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, letting out a deep, shuddering breath at her touch.
Then he leaned down.
His lips met hers in a kiss that was slow, deep, and impossibly gentle. It carried the weight of a man who had waited his entire life to find something precious, and the fierce promise of a protector who would burn the world to keep her safe. Elena wrapped her arms around his broad neck, pulling herself closer, giving herself over completely to the warm, intoxicating tide of his love.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, his breathing heavy and rough.
"Stay here tonight," Vincent murmured against her lips. "In my wing. Where I know you and Sophie are safe."
"Okay," Elena breathed softly, a radiant smile touching her lips. "On one condition."
Vincent lifted an eyebrow, a faint, amused smile returning to his face. "A condition? You're negotiating with a crime boss, Ms. Brooks?"
"I am," Elena grinned gently. "Tomorrow morning, you have to let Sophie draw a picture on your desk."

Vincent let out that deep, sudden, rusty laugh that had shocked the foyer three days ago.
"Agreed," he whispered, kissing her again.
