Chapter 5 - The Fall of Gavin Mercer

Gavin dropped the silver hard drive onto the carpet, his face flushing crimson. "Elena... what is this?! What are you doing?!"
The man in the leather armchair turned around. It wasn't an overseas buyer. It was Special Agent Raymond Vance from the Financial Crimes Division of the FBI.
"Gavin Mercer," Agent Vance announced, standing up and displaying his badge. "You are under arrest for industrial espionage, corporate theft, interstate wire fraud, and illegal offshore tax evasion."
Gavin stumbled backward, his back hitting the wall. "This is a setup! This is a lie! She gave me those designs! She was my employee!"
"I was never your employee, Gavin," Elena said, her voice dropping into a cold, devastating whisper. "Every contract I signed at Mercer Group was stamped under fraudulent pretense. And three hours ago, the United States Patent Office officially registered the Aegis Horizon blueprint exclusively under my name."
Damian stepped forward, placing a heavy, commanding hand on Gavin’s trembling shoulder.
"You thought she had nothing left because you took her shoes and her keys," Damian sneered, his eyes filled with absolute contempt. "You forgot that her genius was in her mind, not in your penthouse."
Agent Vance stepped forward, pulling Gavin’s arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"Gavin Mercer, you have the right to remain silent," Agent Vance recited coldly. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As the FBI agents dragged a shouting, panicked Gavin Mercer out into the main hallway, the ballroom guests watched in shock. Flashbulbs exploded everywhere as press photographers captured the disgraced CEO being led away in handcuffs.
Miriam Cole tried to slip into the crowd to escape, but two federal agents intercepted her at the exit doors, informing her that she was being subpoenaed as an accomplice to corporate fraud.
Elena stood in the center of the hallway, watching Gavin being shoved into the back of a police cruiser outside.
The rain had started again, tapping gently against the tall glass windows of the Metropolitan Club. But this time, Elena was inside the warm, golden hall, wrapped in luxury, surrounded by respect, and completely free.
She felt a tall, warm presence step up behind her.
Damian stood beside her, looking down at her face with a look of profound pride and soft tenderness.
"It’s over, Elena," Damian whispered gently. "He can never hurt you again."
Elena turned to face him, tears of relief shining in her eyes. "Thank you, Damian. You gave me back my life."
May you like
Damian reached out, gently taking her hand, lifting it to his lips, pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles.
"I didn't give you back your life, Elena," Damian said softly, looking straight into her soul. "You took it back yourself. I just held the light so you could see the way."
