Chapter 3 - The Trap is Set

The news of Damian Vescari’s sudden acquisition of Mercer Group’s primary debt exploded across Manhattan’s financial sector like a bomb.
Stock in Mercer Group plummeted by forty percent in a single afternoon. Gavin Mercer’s emergency board meeting degenerated into a shouting match, with investors demanding his immediate resignation.
Meanwhile, on the top floor of the Vescari Tower, Elena sat in a magnificent sunlit studio.
Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of Central Park. The room was outfitted with state-of-the-art architectural drafting tables, modern rendering computers, and dozens of fresh, high-grade sketchbooks.
Damian walked into the studio carrying two glasses of sparkling wine. He handed one to Elena, standing beside her drafting table as she worked on a massive blueprint.
"You haven't slept in twenty-four hours," Damian remarked gently, watching her dark eyes trace the lines on the paper.
"I haven't felt this alive in four years," Elena replied, looking up at him with a breathtaking smile. "For four years, Gavin made me believe that my designs were only good because his firm refined them. Working here... I realize he was just leeching off my soul."
Damian’s expression softened. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The subtle touch sent a electric shiver down Elena’s spine.
"Your talent is legendary, Elena," Damian said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Gavin Mercer didn't refine you. He caged you."
Elena held his gaze, her breath hitching in her throat. She could feel the magnetic draw between them—a pull that went far beyond business or revenge. Damian was a man of power and authority, yet around her, he was intensely protective, gentle, and fiercely loyal.
"Why are you doing all this for me, Damian?" Elena asked softly. "You bought millions in corporate debt overnight. You put your own firm's reputation on the line."
Damian moved closer, his presence warm and commanding. "I told you, Elena. Four years ago, I fell in love with a vision of a building designed by a woman who cared about beauty and heart, not greed. And when I saw that same woman standing in the rain last night, bleeding and betrayed... I swore I would give her the kingdom she deserves."
Before Elena could answer, Damian's private phone rang on the desk.
He picked it up, pressing the speaker. "Speak, Marcus."
"Boss," his chief intelligence operator reported over the line. "Gavin Mercer just made a desperate move. He contacted an overseas black-market broker. He’s trying to sell the digital files of Elena’s confidential master project—the Aegis Horizon skyscraper designs—to a rival East Asian consortium for fifty million dollars to pay off his debts."
Elena gasped, dropping her drafting pen. "The Aegis Horizon? That’s my life’s masterpiece! I worked on those structural calculations for two years!"
Damian’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure, lethal fury. "He’s trying to sell her IP before she can register the patent."
"Where is the exchange happening?" Damian demanded coldly.
"Tonight at midnight," Marcus replied. "At a private charity gala hosted by the Manhattan Architectural Society at the Metropolitan Club. Gavin plans to hand over the physical encrypted hard drive to the buyers during the event."
Damian looked at Elena, a dark, calculating smile spreading across his lips.
"He thinks he’s selling a golden ticket," Damian said softly. "Let's make sure it's his arrest warrant instead."

Elena stood up from her chair, her green eyes burning with determination. "I want to be there, Damian. I want to look him in the eye when he realizes his trap has closed."
Damian smiled—a sharp, proud expression. "Then we’ll give Manhattan a show they will never forget."
