Chapter 4 - The Golden Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Metropolitan Club was bathed in golden light, sparkling crystal chandeliers, and the soft melody of a live string quartet.
Manhattan’s elite—billionaires, politicians, real estate tycoons, and high-society journalists—gathered in tailored tuxedos and evening gowns, sipping vintage champagne.
Gavin Mercer stood near the grand staircase, wearing a classic black tuxedo. Despite his sharp appearance, sweat glistened at his temples. Beside him stood Miriam Cole, wearing a ruby red dress, nervously gripping her champagne flute.
"Is the buyer here yet?" Miriam whispered frantically, looking around the crowded ballroom.
"Calm down," Gavin snapped under his breath. "The representative from the consortium is sitting in the VIP lounge. Once the transfer goes through, we’ll have fifty million in an offshore account in the Caymans. By tomorrow morning, we'll be on a private jet to Zurich, and Vescari won't be able to touch us."
"Are you sure the drive works?" Miriam asked nervously.
"It’s Elena's master drive from the penthouse safe," Gavin sneered quietly. "The fool left it behind when my security threw her out. It contains every detail of the Aegis Horizon design."
Suddenly, the grand brass doors at the top of the staircase swung open.
The master of ceremonies announced into the microphone: "Announcing Mr. Damian Vescari and Miss Elena Whitlock."
The music seemed to stop. Every head in the ballroom turned toward the grand staircase.
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
Elena descended the stairs like a goddess. She wore a custom midnight-blue silk gown adorned with thousands of tiny, shimmering sapphires that caught the light with every step. A diamond choker encircled her graceful neck, and her arm was entwined with Damian Vescari’s. Damian wore a tailored midnight-black tuxedo, looking every bit like the undisputed monarch of New York high society.
"Look at her..." whispered an heiress in the crowd. "Is that Elena Whitlock? She looks magnificent!"
"I heard Vescari backed her new firm with a hundred million dollars!" another investor murmured.
Gavin’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth thudded. His eyes burned with pure jealousy and rage as he watched Elena move effortlessly through the crowd, greeted with bows and admiration from the very people who had ignored her two days ago.
Miriam backed away, panic written all over her face. "Gavin... she shouldn't be here."
"Ignore her," Gavin growled, reaching into his inner coat pocket to feel the sleek silver hard drive. "I’m going to the VIP lounge now. Keep an eye on them."
Gavin broke away from the crowd, making his way down the quiet side corridor toward the private executive suites.
He pushed open the heavy oak door of Suite 402.
Sitting in a high-backed leather armchair was a man in a dark suit, his back turned to the door, sipping whiskey.
"I have the files," Gavin said hurriedly, pulling the silver hard drive from his coat. "Fifty million as agreed. Send the wire transfer to my Cayman account now."
The man in the chair didn't turn around. He took a slow sip of his whiskey.
"Are you sure those files belong to you, Mr. Mercer?" a woman’s voice asked from behind the door.
May you like
Gavin spun around in horror.
Elena stepped into the suite, closing the door behind her with a soft click. Behind her stood Damian Vescari and four armed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
