Chapter 5 - THE CRUMBLED DOMINOES

By midnight, the Harbor Light Health Gala had concluded, but the social earthquake had only just begun.
A video filmed by an attendee at the gala—showing the exact moment Prime Minister Calloway publicly defended Miranda while Julian and Candace stood humiliated at Table One—went viral across global social media platforms within three hours.
By 2:00 AM, Internet sleuths had connected the gala video with the previous bus stop video. The contrast was devastating.
On one side: A arrogant billionaire splashing a woman in a mud puddle and laughing at her poverty. On the other side: That exact same woman, revealed to be the newly wedded wife of the Prime Minister's son, wearing a royal sapphire tiara while her former husband collapsed in public disgrace.
The public backlash was instantaneous and unrelenting.
By 8:00 AM Wednesday morning, the financial markets opened to absolute catastrophe for Julian Hayes.
The six major tech investors who had sat at Table One abruptly canceled their funding agreements with Hayes Meridian Group, citing "severe reputational risk and unethical executive behavior."
Corporate sponsors pulled out of his upcoming real estate developments. Shares of Hayes Meridian Group plummeted by thirty-four percent in a single morning trading session—the worst single-day drop in the company's history.
In his penthouse, Julian sat in the dark, staring at three television screens all broadcasting his downfall.
"Julian!" Candace shrieked, bursting into the living room with two large suitcases. "My agent just called! Three brand endorsements dropped me this morning! They said I'm 'socially toxic'! What are you going to do about this?!"
Julian didn't look up from his drink. His eyes were bloodshot, his suit jacket crumpled on the floor. "Get out, Candace."
"What?!"
"I said get out!" Julian screamed, slamming his glass against the fireplace mantle, shattering it into a hundred pieces. "You encouraged me! You made me pull the car over at that bus stop! You told me to humiliate her! And now... now she has destroyed everything I spent fifteen years building!"
"You did that yourself, you arrogant jerk!" Candace yelled back, grabbing her bags and slamming the penthouse door behind her forever.
Julian fell back onto his sofa, burying his face in his hands.
His phone rang continuously on the table. It was his board of directors, calling an emergency session to vote on his removal as Chief Executive Officer.
He picked up his phone with trembling fingers, not to answer the board, but to dial a number he hadn't called in months.
Miranda’s old cell phone number.
He waited, his heart leaping into his throat as the line connected.
"Miranda? Miranda, please!" Julian sobbed into the receiver. "I'm sorry! I was wrong! I was blind! Please... tell your husband's family to stop the market pressure! They're ruining my company! I'll give you whatever you want! I'll publicly apologize! Just please... talk to me!"
There was a brief silence on the line.
Then, a cool, calm male voice answered.
"Mr. Hayes."
Julian froze. "Adrien?"
"My wife is currently having breakfast in our garden, enjoying the sunshine," Adrien said smoothly. "She has blocked your number on all her devices. I am answering this phone only to give you a single piece of advice."
"Please, Adrien... Mr. Calloway... I didn't know!"
"That was your error, Mr. Hayes," Adrien said softly, his tone devoid of anger, carrying only absolute, unshakeable finality. "You assumed that because she was quiet, she was weak. You assumed that because you took her home, you took her worth. The market isn't ruining your company, Julian. Your own character did that. Do not call this number again."

The line went dead.
Julian dropped the phone onto the rug, staring blankly at the ceiling as the sounds of news reporters outside his building echoed through the morning air.
