Chapter 4 - THE GLASS CASTLE CRUMBLES

Julian’s breath caught in his throat so violently he nearly choked on his breath.

At the top of the grand staircase stood Miranda.

She looked entirely transcendent. The midnight-blue velvet dress clung to her graceful frame like liquid royal elegance, flowing behind her in a dramatic, sweeping train. The sapphire tiara nestled in her dark hair caught the light of a hundred chandeliers, sending sparkles of deep blue and brilliant white across the room.

Her skin was glowing. Her head was held high. And on her lips lived a faint, serene, devastatingly regal smile.

Beside her, holding her hand with unmistakable devotion and standing tall in a perfectly tailored dark tuxedo, was Adrien Calloway—a man whose face Julian instantly recognized from international economic forums and political summits.

The ballroom erupted into thunderous, respectful applause.

"Wait..." Candace gasped, her fork dropping onto her porcelain plate with a loud clack. "Is that... is that Miranda? Why is she wearing a crown? Who is that man?"

Julian couldn't speak. His blood turned to pure ice. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the table so hard the wood creaked.

Mrs. Miranda Calloway.

Calloway.

The name echoed in his ears like a terrifying hammer blow. The Calloway family didn't just have money; they had sovereign geopolitical influence. They owned international shipping lanes, global banking networks, and held the ear of the most powerful leaders in the Western hemisphere. Julian’s entire net worth was a rounding error on the Calloway family’s tax returns.

As the royal party descended the stairs, the crowd parted respectfully. Prime Minister Calloway smiled broadly, leaning over to whisper something in Miranda’s ear that made her laugh—a rich, warm, genuine laugh that echoed across the quieted hall.

Julian watched, paralyzed, as Dr. Charles Evans personally escorted the diplomatic entourage directly toward the front of the room.

Toward Table One.

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. No. No, this can't be real. She was at a bus stop four days ago! She was dripping with mud! She was poor!

The diplomatic party reached the head table. Adrien pulled out a chair for Miranda with absolute grace, bowing his head slightly to whisper against her ear before she sat down. She looked up at him, her eyes shining with an unmistakable, deep love that Julian had never seen in her during their eight years together.

Only when she was fully settled did Miranda slowly turn her head.

Her eyes met Julian’s.

There was no malice in her gaze. There was no anger. There was only the calm, absolute authority of a woman who had ascended to a height where his existence was nothing more than a speck of dust on her horizon.

She reached down, deliberately pulling off her elbow-length white lace glove.

Under the blazing lights of the ballroom chandeliers, the four-carat diamond and the deep blue Victorian sapphire on her finger flashed brilliantly—right into Julian’s staring eyes.

Julian’s jaw trembled. He took an unsteady step forward, his voice barely a croak. "Mi... Miranda?"

Adrien Calloway turned smoothly, stepping between Julian and Miranda with an imposing, quiet strength. He looked down at Julian with cool, assessing gray eyes that had negotiated international treaties.

"Can I help you, sir?" Adrien asked softly, his voice echoing with effortless authority.

Julian swallowed hard, his face flushed red with a terrifying mix of humiliation and shock. "I... I am Julian Hayes. Miranda's... I mean, I'm the founder of Hayes Meridian Group."

Adrien’s expression didn't change by a fraction. "Ah. Mr. Hayes." He looked Julian up and down, as if examining a minor smudge on his shoe. "My wife mentioned meeting you near a bus stop recently. She mentioned your driving could use significant improvement."

A soft murmur broke out among the surrounding tables. Several prominent investors at Julian’s own table suddenly shrank back, recognizing the immense political shift happening before their eyes.

Candace, trying desperately to save face, puffed out her chest and stepped forward. "Well! I don't care who you think you are, Miranda was married to Julian for eight years! She left his house with nothing! You're probably just being fooled by her!"

Prime Minister Calloway paused, turning his head slowly toward Candace. His sharp blue eyes narrowed with formidable diplomatic coldness.

"Young lady," the Prime Minister said, his deep voice carrying easily across the silence of the head section. "My daughter-in-law is the president of a global health initiative funded by my family’s trust. She is a woman of unmatched integrity, grace, and intelligence. I suggest you choose your next words with extreme care before my security team escorts you from this building."

Candace gasped, turning instantly pale. She looked around, realizing that every camera in the room—including three major news networks—was currently focused on their table.

Julian felt his knees buckle. The investors sitting at his table were already standing up, quietly collecting their jackets and sliding away, terrified of being associated with a man who had publicly insulted the Prime Minister’s family.

"Miranda..." Julian whispered, looking past Adrien with desperate, pleading eyes. "Miranda, please... we need to talk. There's been a mistake."

Miranda didn't stand up. She picked up her crystal water glass, took a delicate sip, and looked at him with gentle, crushing finality.

"There's no mistake, Julian," Miranda said softly. "You got your splash of mud. Now... enjoy your dinner."
