Chapter 3 - THE CALM BEFORE THE CHANDELIERS

Tuesday evening arrived under a crisp, autumn sky. The grand driveway of the Boston Ritz-Carlton was choked with sleek black limousines, town cars, and flashing media cameras.
Red carpets lined the entrance, flanked by security personnel in crisp tuxedos. The Harbor Light Health Gala was the premiere charity event of the season, bringing together the city's highest earners, political figures, and medical pioneers.
At 18:30 hours, a glittering black Maybach pulled up to the valet.
The door was opened by a white-gloved attendant, and Julian Hayes stepped out onto the red carpet, looking sharp in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo. He turned and offered his hand to Candace, who emerged in a bright, neon-pink backless gown heavily encrusted with rhinestones—a dress designed explicitly to draw every lens in the building.
Flashbulbs erupted instantly.
"Mr. Hayes! Over here!" a reporter shouted. "Is Hayes Meridian Group planning a takeover of the North Shore medical tech sector?"
Julian flashed his polished, practiced billionaire smile, waving casually at the press wall. "We're here tonight to support a great cause," Julian said smoothly into a offered microphone. "And, of course, to check in on some old acquaintances who are working hard to put this event together."
Candace giggled loudly, leaning into the microphone. "Yes! We’re especially looking forward to seeing the local volunteers! It’s so sweet how some people try to stay relevant through charity work after losing everything else!"
The press corps exchanged confused looks, but Julian simply smirked, taking Candace by the elbow and gliding into the grand marble foyer.
Inside the ballroom, five hundred elite guests mingled beneath massive crystal chandeliers. Waiters in pristine white jackets moved through the crowds carrying silver trays of champagne and caviar.
Julian led his group of tech investors directly to Table One—the absolute center of the room, positioned directly in front of the main podium and stage.
"Ah, perfection," Julian declared, pulling out Candace’s chair. "Prime positioning. From here, we can see every person who walks through those grand doors."
He scanned the room with predatory satisfaction. He looked near the service doors, expecting to see Miranda nervously holding a clipboard, dressed in a plain black event coordinator's suit, adjusting tablecloths or dodging demanding guests.
He didn't see her.
Ten minutes passed. Then twenty.
Julian tapped his fingers against his stemware, a subtle edge of irritation creeping into his throat. "Where is she?" he muttered.
"Who, babe?" Candace asked, taking a selfie with a high-society heiress at the next table.
"Miranda," Julian grumbled. "She’s supposed to be managing the floor. Don't tell me she called in sick just to avoid seeing us."
Just then, Dr. Charles Evans, the distinguished gray-haired president of the Harbor Light Foundation, walked up to Table One carrying a glass of scotch.
"Ah, Mr. Hayes! Welcome," Dr. Evans said politely. "We are deeply grateful for your generous sponsorship tonight."
"It’s my pleasure, Charles," Julian said smoothly, standing up to shake his hand. "By the way, I was expecting to see my ex-wife, Miranda, coordinating the room tonight. I hope her... unfortunate financial situation hasn't prevented her from fulfilling her obligations to your board?"
Dr. Evans blinked, an odd, almost unreadable expression crossing his face before he smoothed it over with a diplomatic smile. "Oh, Miranda hasn't neglected a single detail, Mr. Hayes. In fact, she personally oversaw the arrangements for Table One."
"Did she?" Julian grinned wickedly, glancing at Candace. "How thoughtful. Is she hiding in the kitchen?"
Dr. Evans chuckled softly—a sound that made Julian’s stomach tighten unnaturally.
"Hiding? Goodness, no, Mr. Hayes," Dr. Evans said quietly. "Miranda is currently in the private VIP protocol lounge on the penthouse floor, awaiting the arrival of our primary international guests of honor."
Before Julian could process that statement, the double doors of the ballroom suddenly creaked open, and six heavy security personnel from the U.S. State Department stepped into the hall, taking up positions along the main aisle.
The brass trumpets of the venue's live orchestra chimed, signaling an official diplomatic announcement.
The room fell instantly silent. Five hundred heads turned simultaneously toward the grand double doors at the top of the marble staircase.
"Ladies and Gentlemen," the Master of Ceremonies echoed through the powerful sound system. "Please rise for the arrival of the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Bellmont, the Honorable Harrison Calloway, accompanied by his wife, Lady Eleanor Calloway..."

The crowd applauded warmly as the distinguished, grey-templed Prime Minister glided down the stairs, waving graciously.
"And," the MC’s voice resonated with amplified grandeur, "accompanying them tonight... the Prime Minister's son, Mr. Adrien Calloway, and his wife, Mrs. Miranda Calloway!"
