Chapter 5 - The Insolvency of Hope
The legal battle that followed was the swiftest and most brutal destruction of a corporate family in Chicago's history.
Because the evidence of corporate fraud and asset dissipation was absolute, the court granted an emergency freeze on all Mercer family assets within forty-eight hours. Adrian’s investment firm was placed into a court-ordered receivership, with Mr. Callahan taking over as managing director.
Two months later, Adrian sat in a sterile, fluorescent-lit deposition room at the federal building. He wore a cheap, faded suit he had bought from a discount store—the kind of store he used to mock his wife for visiting.
Across the table sat Marcus Bennett and Eleanor.
"Mr. Mercer," Marcus said, sliding a final settlement agreement across the table. "Madam Vale is prepared to drop the criminal charges for corporate fraud under one condition. You will sign this full waiver, relinquishing any claim to future alimony, any share in the Vale Group's subsidiaries, and you will personally assume the ninety-million-dollar debt incurred by your family."
Adrian looked at the pen in his shaking hand. If he didn't sign, he was facing fifteen years in a federal penitentiary. If he did sign, he would spend the rest of his life working to pay off a debt he could never clear.
He looked at Eleanor. She sat there in serene silence, her presence radiating a power that made the entire legal system bow to her will.
"Why did you stay with me for six years?" Adrian asked, his voice cracking, a tear finally spilling down his gaunt cheek. "If you had all this power... why did you let me treat you like that?"
Eleanor leaned forward, her storm-gray eyes locking onto his for the last time.

"Because I wanted to believe that somewhere inside the man I married, there was a soul that didn't have a price tag," she whispered. "But you proved to me that some people aren't driven by ambition, Adrian. They’re just driven by greed. You didn't lose me because I was a Vale. You lost me because you forgot how to be human."
Adrian lowered his head, a heavy sob tearing from his chest as he pressed the pen to the paper and signed his life away.
