Chapter 1 - The Throne of Glass

The Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton was a cathedral of blinding light and high-society arrogance. Over six hundred of the world’s most powerful investors, foreign diplomats, and old-money aristocrats milled beneath crystal chandeliers that cast a golden glow over silks, furs, and millions of dollars in diamonds.
At Table One, positioned directly beneath the velvet-curtained central stage, Adrian Mercer sat with his chest puffed out. He adjusted his platinum cufflinks, basking in the envious stares of the surrounding millionaires.
"I told you, Adrian," Savannah Reed purred, leaning close enough that her perfume clouded his senses. Her glittering silver gown caught the light with every breath. "Your genius couldn't be hidden forever. Being seated at the host table? The Vale Dominion Group clearly recognizes who holds the true financial future of Chicago."
"Of course they do," Margaret Mercer chimed in from across the white silk tablecloth, swirling a glass of vintage champagne. "My son has doubled Mercer Global's valuation in just three years. It’s only natural the Vales want to partner with him."
Franklin Mercer gave a solemn, arrogant nod, while Brooke frantically scanned the crowd, looking for photographers. None of them questioned where the sudden influx of anonymous capital over the last few years had truly come from. They genuinely believed Adrian was a visionary.
Suddenly, the room's murmur dropped to a profound, reverent whisper.
The heavy velvet curtains at the front of the ballroom parted. A man in a flawlessly tailored charcoal suit stepped up to the microphone. It was Mr. Callahan, the notorious, iron-willed Chief Executive Officer of the Vale Dominion Group—the gatekeeper to a trillion-dollar global empire.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Callahan’s voice boomed through the pristine acoustic system. "For thirty years, the Vale family has operated from the shadows, controlling the veins of global commerce. Tonight, the era of secrecy ends. The sole heir to the Vale legacy, the woman who single-handedly funds over forty major corporations in this room—including the entirety of Mercer Global—has decided to step into the light."
Adrian’s breath hitched. Including Mercer Global? He looked at his father, confusion finally cracking his arrogant facade. "Dad... did you negotiate a secondary line of credit with the Vales?"
"No," Franklin whispered, his face suddenly turning pale. "I thought... I thought that was your doing, Adrian."
"Please welcome," Callahan declared, bowing deeply toward the grand staircase at the back of the stage, "the Chairperson of the Vale Dominion Group... Madam Eleanor Vale."
The spotlight swung to the top of the marble stairs.
A woman stood there, draped in a breathtaking midnight-blue gown embroidered with thousands of shimmering diamonds. Around her neck, resting against her flawless porcelain skin, was the legendary Vale Sapphire, its deep blue brilliance casting a mesmerizing reflection across the room. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders in perfect, elegant waves.
Adrian leaned forward, squinting through the bright spotlight.
The woman stepped forward into the clear light.
Adrian’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering violently against the marble floor. The crystal fragments sprayed across Savannah's silver dress, but no one noticed.
"Eleanor?" Adrian choked out, his voice a pathetic, strangled squeak.

Beside him, Margaret’s jaw dropped so wide her diamond earrings trembled. Brooke stood halfway out of her chair, her eyes bulging in pure, unadulterated horror.
The quiet, compliant woman they had left washing dishes in a faded cream cardigan was standing at the pinnacle of global wealth. And she was looking down at them with eyes as cold as absolute zero.
